Upgrading World's slowest W7 x64 computer? - Page 3

Well, I really appreciate all of the good suggestions so far but unfortunately my dad is only wanting/letting me buy him a GPU, besides, this computer only sees about 10 hours or of use a week, but no more than 30, so it does not need to be fast, but at least usable for youtube, disk burning, and random browsing.

I will let you guys know what kind of performance change I get within the next 4 days or so.

raidmaxGuy - If all your buying is a GPU, your dad wont see much improvment...certainly not as much as he would if you were install more RAM and faster HDD or even an SSD if its compatible.

Yeah I am very aware but he can be quite stubborn, so I am just going to have him realize firsthand that he needs it.

Heck, he used to do a ton of custom PCs(even built one for his mom ), but that ended after he built his Athlon K7 computer... No idea why.. But then again he used that thing with Windows 2k until like idk less than 2 years ago.

Well if its his money, all you can do is try and explain and if not, just buy a gpu then when he asks where his performance increase is, you can tell him

Ok, so it currently has 1GB of PC4200 and is using the IGP

So, need minor hardware upgrades, low level PCIe gpu and RAM.

Suggestions on GPU? Ordering from the Egg tonite, so please link to products on their site so I can get all the stuff I am buying shipped about the same time if not in the same box.
I have a bunch of experience with this, so I'll offer some sage advice...

1. Proper optimizations will make all the difference in the world here - it's truly startling just how much faster things will be.
2. Don't buy a GPU right now(the T5082 is already equipped with a Xpress 200) - dollar for dollar, getting RAM is a vastly superior choice: http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...=T5082&Cat=RAM

That's 2GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 for $29.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, here's my 5+ yr. old notebook running Win7 Pro with a $50 Scorpio Black:

I think its IDE..... dunno why there was not a SATA drive installed in the first place... But I am not 100% if its that computer that has SATA and it isnt even used... I know the secondary drive is IDE (like a 60-80GB Maxtor)

and @jlells01, tried extremely hard to tell my dad this, but he said "Get the video card first and if its still too slow then buy me some RAM". That is totally backwards thinking for you!
