Seagate Momentus XT, Impresses Me!

Thread Starter
Purchased a Momentus XT 500GB 2.5" hard drive for my wife a couple weeks back now. I am happy to report to you, my friends, that the drive is freaking awesome. I really got to give kudos to Seagate. It vastly improves startup and application load times, while keeping costs low and storage space high. It isn't a replacement for an SSD for people who need large amounts of bandwidth (such as encoding, or database manipulation), but it is very impressive for people looking to improve their system's responsiveness on a budget.

For anyone not familiar with the Momentus XT line, they are hybrid drives. This one has 500GB of hard drive storage, and an addition 4GB SLC (SSD) cache. All commonly accessed files are loaded into the SSD cache and that cache is used when you open those files. So things like your web browser are going to load off an SSD, while things like music and pictures remain on your hard drive. This means you get all the speed where you need it, and none of it where you don't. 4GB may not sound like a lot at first, but understand that the 4GB stores only applications, and only some files in their folders at that. So it'll go a long way. Write orders on the XT, however, go straight to the HDD and are not sped up by the SSD. This is entirely understandable for a bounty of reasons, I won't go into them though.

Unrelated note to anyone : Don't buy hard drives with high platter counts. More trouble than they are worth.
