Future upgrade: Boot drive recommandation?

Since I will have some spare cash this winter, I am planning to get another HDD as a boot drive. I have been looking at the refurbished 74Gb Velociraptors on newegg for 60$ and wonder: will it be a good investment? I'm not wanting to go with an SSD, it's not like those blazing fast speeds mater to me. I just want something faster than my current Caviar that won't break my pockets.

So, would it be worth it or a waste?

A little faster boot time, Steam is making my start-up pretty slow with a 50gb folder .

edit: and the reason I ask is way more to see if it's worth it over another HDD, heard the 640 Black were fast but that's too much space for a boot drive...

There is never too much space .

Get the 7200rpm HD103SJ instead. I'm going to use that as my boot drive, if I ever get the time to migrate my data to my external and re-format. Ther difference between 7200rpm and 10000rpm is marginal. Not enough for 60$.

I've heard of people "short stroking" drives in RAID 0 to get more speed, but with rotational media, it will never match an SSD. Well, except in sequential reads/writes.

I would save another 60$ and get a 60gb SSD, move your steam folder to a HDD and boot up will be almost instantanous .

Problem is...I want something that will last for 4-5 years and SSD seems to have low lifetime when compared to HDD: my current backup HDD is an old 60gb 2000rpm IDE drive from my old P3 that I toasted 7 years ago. I hope to be able to keep my stuff safe without paying 100$ for an SSD that I know I won't even need.
