4GB x 2 sticks unganged RAM on Win7 32 bit

Hi,

I'm using a total 8GB of RAM (4gb x 2) on Windows 7 32 bit. I know at 32 bit, I can only utilize upto 4GB of RAM, maybe even less.

I would like to know if in unganged mode, are my 2 sticks ulitized? ex. 2gb of stick 1 working independently from 2gb of stick 2.

Or

is my system just sharing one of my 4gb stick? which actually makes it work like ganged mode.

Hope someone can enlighten me.

Thanks.

Ganged vs Unganged changes how the Processor uses the memory.

Ganged memory means all cores share the memory as a whole.
Unganged memory means each core will have a seperate piece of the memory.

Eaxample: 4 sticks of RAM unganged with 4 cores will give 1 stick for every 1 core.
That's just my understanding of it.

I recommend just keeping it unganged and installing 64-bit. Easiest solution to get your utilization.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, upgrading to 64 bit would be simple and logical for maximum utilization of my RAM. I just would like to stay at 32 bit for now since it serves enough for my purpose.

I wanted to know if my 4gb x 2 sticks are both utilized because if not, I was also looking into the option of replacing it with a 2gb by 2 stick to maximize unganged performance on a 32 bit OS.

So for example, i have 2x2gb 1600 DDR3 memory. and a quadcore, would unganged give better performance?

There are many topics showing unganged mode to be better in theory and practice. This link shows better performance in unganged mode.

http://ixbtlabs.com/articles3/cpu/am...ganged-p1.html

Which is why I also would like to make sure my 2 sticks of RAM are truly working in unganged mode.

One, it can use about 3.25GB.

Two, why did you buy 8GB of RAM if you were only going to be using a 32 bit OS?

Yes, my OS says "3.25gb usable"

I got too excited when I bought parts for the system. I overlooked the fact that the system I was building for was running on a 32 bit OS. It was a stupid, compulsive move from me.

Technically, modern 32-bit OSes can address up to 64GB of RAM thanks to PAE. However, Microsoft artificially enforces a 4GB limit in 32-bit Windows.

I would most certainly recommend getting a 64 bit OS, considering anything that works on 32 will work on 64, and you'd be able to utilize all the resources you have.

It can use 4GB. However, video card memory and other memory will take away from that. So the result in your case will be 3GB or less usable.
Get 64-bit. Can't, then run both DIMMs for the sake of dual channel.
