6950 after fire damage

Thread Starter
So, I kind of messed up my 6950 by trying to install an aftermarket cooler. After installing the cooler, the AMD Driver kept crashing so I tried messing around with it and this happened:

Basically this happened when I plugged another power source into the adapter that was connected to the fan port on my GFX.. sparks came out and all that jazz. Windows did not crash, computer kept running(I know, I should've turned it off @.@) .. only thing that changed was that the fans on the GFX stopped working. I have now reverted to stock heat sink and fan, and the AMD drivers no longer crash, but the fans don't work if I connect them to the GFX fan port. (ingame performance is the same, except it overheats because the fan blowing on it is a case fan and eventually shuts down after a while).

My question is.. could this have damaged any other components? Even though it's not apparent I was just wondering.

Also, I'm in the process of debating whether I should get the GTX 580. Could the new GFX card get damaged if I plug it in the Mobo?
Thanks in advance.

Looks like you got REALLY lucky: If the card still work, you probably just blew of the fan controller. try to mod the wire to put it straight on the molex plugs, let the fan at 100% and run Furmark to check for artifacts.

And for your second question, no, it shouldn't have damaged your mobo in any way. Unless a surge went to the PCI-E port, it should be fine. And if it happened, it should have made the port literally dead: since the card still work it must be alright.

No.. I doubt there is going to be other damage because the fan header is on a different circuit to reduce interference, power fluctuation, etc.

But yeah never EVER swap power connections when the computer is running! Even plugging in a fan can kill something.

It wasn't faulty hardware: he messed big time when trying to do something he clearly didn't look experienced enough to do. He should be happy his card is still working, and there is no way he'll get a refund for that.

you could always go into water cooling. that will get rid of the need for the fan controller on your card.

Or I could just get another adapter for the mini 4 pin fan connector. It was working, but I was hearing sparking sounds coming from it so I took it out. And when i took it out it kinda fell apart. The fans on both heatsinks work, it's just the port on the fan port GFX card itself that doesnt work. My question is: could this have damaged my Mobo, CPU, etc. Thanks

Surprised it still works. If your gpu is still alive all of your other components are unharmed.

Not this kind of crap again....

EDIT: I've plugged stuff in while the comp was on... just take it as a learning experience.
