What is the "BOINCers Gone Bonkers" event?
Similar to the Foldathons; this is a 48-hour period where everyone fires up every computer they have, and tries to earn as many credits as they possibly can in an effort to boost our team ranking in both overall ranking and per-project rankings.
It's also a great time to take a break from gaming to increase your credits. Plus, it raises awareness for BOINC and distributed computing as a whole. Getting word out is crucial for the long term stability and success of our BOINC team, and we hope to get some new long term BOINCers in the process.
So...What is BOINC?
BOINC is an open-source software created for volunteer and grid computing.
The BOINC software is not a specific application designed to perform a particular science project. It is an architecture that supports many projects. Using the BOINC software, you can choose what projects you would like to run through the "BOINC Manager".
Q: So it's like Folding@Home?
In a way yes, and in a way, no.
It is like Folding@Home in the sense that it is an example of distributed computing. You run the software on your computer, you grab work units, your CPU/GPU processes it, and when it is finished it sends it back to the project server and you get points/credits.
It is NOT like Folding@Home in the sense of a single project solving a single problem. The BOINC software lets you run a wide variety of scientific projects.
Join and participate and you could win a GTX 275! (+ more prizes to be announced)
