6790 grey screen freezes

Thread Starter
looking for help. Screen turns grey. Not just under load. Wondering if its not getting enough power. It only has 1 6-pin connector. Maybe not enough amps. 18A per 12v rail.

You're getting the GSOD (gray screen of death)? If so, it can be a mixture of things. First off, unless any of your hardware is overclocked (Yes, an unstable CPU overclock can cause a GSOD, I can speak from experience) then it's definitely software. Have you tried reinstalling your GPU drivers / different version? Lots of people are having issues with the 11.10 preview drivers, so I'd install 11.9.

Guys, I hope there's no problem if I also participate in this thread, 'cause this is happening to me right now. Exactly same problems as yours, budda503, except I get gray, green, brown and blue vertical-striped screens. No kidding, these are the ones I get, but most of the time it's 100% gray or blue stripes screens.

Tried XFX (don't think they mod it) Catalyst 11.4 (the one which was provided on the board CD) and also XFX Catalyst 11.9, same results. In fact, also tried no Catalyst at all, just the driver suggested by Win7. Same problem.

Win7 32 or 64 bit, same results also. Enabling or disabling AMD Overdrive, no difference, same problem.

As I'm using an old monitor until I find THE one I want, I'm using a DVI-to-VGA converter. Even tried taking my machine to the living room and connecting it via HDMI... not a single difference.

This is completely a basic and linear process. Install Win7, then install driver, use it a bit doing anything at 2D (browsing on IE almost always does it) and boom. Really sad.
