The Future of Gaming? - Page 3

Hopefully something like this. While I don't trust Sony to put nanomachines in my brain, I think some sort of direct brain interface will be invented so we can use mind control for gaming and images can be displayed directly in our brain.

Games are entertainment, as books usually are. Books have been existant for as long as you can remember and games will be developed for more centuries and centuries as new ideas are spat out. It's nearly impossible as to say how games will look like in the future, but it is possible to predict the economics of games. Look at Steam, for example. It uses cloud gaming. Thats it--future of games is cloud gaming. With EA joining the digital distribution battles with its Origin software and BF3, it will probably change the way we play and buy games. In the future, many games developers to start distributing their games online while box copies of games fall in production.

Gaming will also move its focus to touchscreen pads.

nVidia's 3D technology is paving the way for 3D gaming while ATI's CrossFire is giving games a pretty sexy look. Combine those together in the future and you have gaming experience that'll take away your breath.

Smartphones are becoming so powerful, almost getting stronger than some modern netbooks. They are already replacing low-end digital cameras and MP3 players, as well as portable gaming devices and everyday items. It's not surprising if they would compete with PC and console games. I think Xperia Play's analog controller will influence many smartphones in the future.

Graphics will always improve as long as research is productive, obviously. But as you mentioned, after 3D photorealistic graphics and all that, what's next? I honestly think that our values will go out of control and let these games take over our lives unknowingly, especially the newer generations (we'll be old men by then).

In the future, we'll have contact lenses in our eyes that let us browse the Internet and do other tasks. It may replace smartphones but that depends on a whole lotta things; could affect gaming. If you want to know about the future, read a book called "The Physics of the Future" by Michio.

In the immediate future, the next big thing will be mind control, as the extant technology is advanced.

Next 50 years, I would fully expect to see something like the Holodeck from TNG, total physical immersion.

Of course, it'll be no use to us because we'll have been enslaved by the terrible squawking alienbirds from Blargon 4.

No, but in all seriousness, I think it's a moot point, as this is all assuming the status quo remains and innovation is possible.

Seems to me that 50 years is a long time, and I'm pretty certain that our society will go through monumental change between now and then, and 'gaming' might not feature greatly.
