It's not if you want to run BF3 on a 120hz monitor at anything higher than low settings (or even low). That's why people are asking whether he'll play at 60hz or 120hz because there is a big difference in what GPU or multi-GPU he should get.

Yeah, instead of spending to overkill on components I'd look to get what you actually need and then spend the difference on better audio or peripherals.

xonar dx is a great price/performance sound card IMO [i'm biased], pair it with some decent speakers or some nice headphones for wonderful results.

overspending on something you don't need to achieve an unnecessarily high framerate in one game just to see a little bit more fluidity in movement is incredibly stupid, but that's just my opinion..

Well heres how I broke it down:
i5 2500K - $220 that is pretty much set (its $180 if you live near a Microcenter but im just gonna use retail prices)

Motherboard ~$200 You have a lot of choices here.
You don't need a super high end board to overclock. It really just depends on what you need out of it. The Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3 has a lot of features for a $125 board. Other options are MSI GD 55 or higher, Gigabyte UD3 or higher, Asus P8Z68-V or higher, but they will cost a little bit more.

Memory ~$50-60 1.65V will work but 1.5V is the sweet spot for SB. There are very little gains going higher than 1333-1600ish MHz with 1155. You certainly won't notice it during BF3/Skyrim. Theres a lot to choose from [here], tall heatspreaders are more for looks nowadays, as 1.5V DDR3 memory does not run nearly as hot as older, higher voltage memory did, especially if you don't overclock it. Furthermore, memory has very very little impact on 1155 overclocking so you can just buy a kit and throw it in and forget about it. So I would recommend something like this or this, as heatspreders ultimately only get in the way, but if you see one with colors that fit a theme you want, by all means go for it.

SSD $110 Crucial M4 is very highly recommended, especially because of the Sandforce drive issues (which are supposedly fixed now but you still can't go wrong with the M4). You really shouldn't need a bigger one than 64GB but its not wrong to get something bigger.

Now for HDD, are you sure you want an SSD AND a RAID 0 setup? Do you think you will really make use of it? Having the OS on the SSD is what makes a huge difference, and what made RAID 0 so attractive, as that is used far more than storage. The SSD improves your entire experience while using your computer, the RAID setup will improve load times slightly and thats about it. I would either scrap the second HDD, or put the money from the second HDD towards a bigger SSD that you can install both your games onto. A 120GB should do. You will see a bigger performance increase that way.
Samsung F3 is $65.

For a DVD drive, a $20 Asus drive will do. Blu-Ray drives I'm not sure which are good, but they all seem to be about ~$60ish.

After all that, you have at least $675 (counting a 120GB SSD and a single HDD, which is the more expensive option, and also $200 for the motherboard). Now what do you do with that? Well, for starters, any current single card will NOT MAX BF3. Meaning that SLI/Xfire options will give better performance. The best single card you can get is a GTX 580. Dual GPUs, GTX 590 and 6990, are about $700. You could squeeze them in by going with some of the cheaper alternatives above (easily save $70 on mobo with the Asrock), but then you won't have much left for cooling/sound. But for that price you could get a pair for GTX 570s or 6970s, which will outperform their counterparts. Or you could drop down to a pair of 560Ti or 6950s, which will outperform their top single GPU counterparts. They will be slightly slower than the dual GPU cards (I think?) but you will have more money left over for cooling/sound. Choices, choices...

Thank you for your recommendations. I will delve deeper into your post tomorrow. However, based on what you said, I think I might go with these for storage. Opinions?

If youre gonna get a Vertex 2, get the one without the E in the name >this one< ( OCZ Vertex 2 OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - dont get this one )
Originally there was only one Vertex 2 that was on 32nm MLC, then they switched it to 22nm (I think those were the sizes? regardless they switched to newer, smaller die). But because of the way it was set up, the newer ones had worse performance than the older ones. Basically they fit twice as much storage onto each block with half as many blocks for the same size drive and that caused a bottleneck that reduced performance.

Other than that, it should work out fine.

I was running Crossfire 6970s 2 gig versions and play my Games on a 55 inch Toshiba 1080p tv through Hdmi. While also running a 23" 1080p Lcd .I dropped 1 card because the crossfire wasn't worth the headaches when 1 6970 2 gig version plays every game out at 60 fps.a 6970 2 gig version runs roughly 300. to 350. usd.another thought on crossfire ,if a game is made for it it works great but most games are a hassle and frame rates drop.but for benching they rock in crossfire in 3dmark 06 my crossfire scores 35,000 but besides benchmarking .Not worth it at this time.Just my opinion. Now if i want too play a game i install it and play.No messing with crossfire for 2 days to get it working properly and waiting on new drivers.

Conclusion 1 6970 2 gig is more then enough. Although i do love crossfire setup because its cool to have and benchmarks great.
