help with 9500GT

Thread Starter
Hello ,i have a nvidia 9500GT with 280.26 driver and its default clock is - GPU clock 550 MHz,Memory clock 400 MHz and Shader clock 1400 MHz and i raised GPU to 650 ,memory to 500 and shader to 1600 MHz with the nvidia control panel performance tool and started a game and got lower FPS then before with bad performance ,so just after 5 mins i returned my 9500GT back to default clocks and again ran the game,it ran better than overclock but now im getting these hiccups style lags in which game runs fine for 2 min and then lags or hiccups and repeats this again and again ,so i ran FURMARK and got result in Benchmark(no preset) with all options unchecked and got FPS min-4 max-7 avg5 and temp max 62c ,so i thought of voltage and downloaded MSI afterburner but it did not allow me to change or check voltage even after activating from option in MSI ,my GPU is Nvidia Geforce 9500gt DDR2 1gb,pls any help would be much appreciated

I had a similar issue with a 2600XT a few years ago in Source engine-powered games.

1) It is usually one of two things, too much of your CPU power is now going to feeding the GPU, and the CPU can't process it's own work load reducing overall performance.
2) Your GPU is erroring with it's OC and is having to reprocess items, or it isn't able to handle them and just dropping the frame.

9500GTs really weren't made for overclocking much at all, especially not a 30% overclock. They don't have voltage control AFAIK on any version of this card for that exact reason. I don't even think I've seen one released with more than a 50MHz factory OC because they aren't performance cards by any standard.

You pretty much need to get a better GPU to get better performance as 9500GTs were more aimed at people with two screens, not playing games.

Also, in the future, keep your posts to a single forum, most applicable to what you're doing. You have an NVIDIA card, it has nothing to do with "Performance Computing" or any real "Benchmarking" you just needed help with an NVIDIA card.

To make a good suggestion you have to give us a lot more information.

First thing I'll recommend is to fill in your system information as best as you can. Go to your "User CP" (link at the top-center of every page), on the left side of the page you'll see a column of different links; look for one that says "Add System" and click it. Fill in all the information on that form that you can (most important being CPU, MotherBoard, Power Supply, Case, and any other details you can give are just that much more helpful). Also put in the resolution of your monitor (the exact model of it is less important).

Secondly, what kind of games, and any specific ones, do you play? RPGs, FPSs, MMORPGs - they all benefit from different things, and there is no point to dropping $1200 on a GPU if you're just playing solitaire with it. Also, if you're on a budget, let us know so we're not recommending $300 cards when you only has $150 to spend.

AFAIK, the NVIDIA 560Ti and ATI 6950 are the two best gaming cards for the money, but if you're looking to max out BF3 you'll need a lot more power than those cards offer.

The more information relevant to a topic that you can provide, the better. Don't be surprised if the first response to a question is people asking you for more details.

It notifies the admin of the forum, they review it (will delete the extra threads) and you'll get a notice of some kind. I don't know for sure as I've never gotten a warning on this forum. Since you're new here I will suggest you look at: http://www.overclock.net/new-members...ions-must.html That thread contains rules, suggestions, tips, tricks and answers most questions you could have about the forums. Most of the stuff is pretty universal and will apply to almost all forums you frequent.

Thread cleaned, and your multiple posts for the same question have been removed.

The report feature is found in the left column of every post, its the button that is a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. That button tells us moderators that a thread needs attention, along with a note the user puts in for us telling us why it was reported. So if you accidentally post the same question in multiple forums again, you can feel free to report your own post, and let us know it was an accident next time.

Keep in mind, double posts aren't allowed (requires 24 hours, otherwise use the edit button). Otherwise, just stick to the topic at hand, and there will usually not be a problem.

To answer your question:
The reason why the game was slower after the overclock was likely because the overclock wasn't fully stable. I've seen that a lot with older cards like that. Not really for sure how you'd want to check for stability with a card like that, maybe OCCT GPU test perhaps.
