2TB drives are just too unreliable for that large of a setup, even with redundancy.

Everyone I talk to says that the hitachi drives work very well and the one guy I was talking to has a 40 something drive array with the hitachi drives at it works great.

this thread = tl;dr

I really think you need more than just one hot-spare. I would fully suggest either running four 7-disk RAID5 arrays, or running two 14-disk RAID 50 arrays with each RAID5 array in both options having it's own dedicated hot-spare.

Your chance of array failure is very high during rebuild because the array has so many members.

Also what combination of controllers are you planning on using to be able to get 32 drives in a single RAID6?

To answer the OP question: 58TB would last me about 5 years; 7 years tops. That's if I never deleted anything. If I started making my HTPC record TV shows/movies to it, probably a year and half since my 2TB drive filled up in about 3 weeks; it's got a Quad tuner cablecard in it, so I can do 4 simoultaneous 1080p recordings...

not sure what tl;dr means, but i am going to use LSI MegaRAID SAS 8708EM2 along with a HP SAS expander. also I might use more hot spares not sure yet.

I would use 3Tb drives but my controller can't use those and the 3Tb drives haven't been tested much in raid arrays.

I have filled up about 25Tb of space on my home server and I have had it for a little over a year now. So maybe like 3 years? Too many movies/music coming out that I must have smile.gif

I'm using almost a thousand times as much storage now as I was 10 years go.

58TB is going to be tiny in decade. Phones will probably have more.

I had 300Gb RAID 0 for C:\, 3Tb 0+1 for D:\ and 3x 1Tb external HD's almost full... (Music, movies, also self-made vacation movies wink.gif, games, 720p-1080p-DVD and BD rips/downloads... It will stack up very fast!

Wich also raises a quetion for me... At this rate of data processing... You cannot keep up with it... What will they do in future? What will eventually substitute the HDD's/SSD's???!!! I cannot imagine that my children/grandchilderen still uses Gb's/Tb's/Whatever-bytes... I mean: What if your collection is soooo huge (in Gb/Tb/WE-b's) They must find something to store it in... I dunno? Air? Gas? A Virtual Reality Science Fiction Room where you can walk into, and after pressing a button it dissapeares? I dunno, but they just cannot keep getting bigger and bigger this way...

How do you capture game footage? I have played around with it but I haven't had much success with it.
Use FRAPS the free version captures only 30 sec, but I'm sure you'll fiend a registered one wink.gif It captures @ 60fps full-screen with 5.1 (or7.1???) and takes 10-15Gb for like 2-3 min of capturing gaming... And for me it works better when I capture the file on the same HDD where the game is installed. If I use another HDD (even if it's my WD Raptor) it stutters --> prolly the controller...

It would be pointless unless they start making tvs with better resolution than just 1080p
Sharp, Sony, Panasonic,... is making one (Google: 4000x2000 TV or so wink.gif or Ultra High Definition and see its 4x better than Full HD smile.gif)
