5870 Fan replacement

Thread Starter
So, I got a 5870 with a failing fan. Thus I need to either replace the fan or the whole cooler.
The problems with replacing the cooler are cost and size. I have space for a triple slot aftermarket cooler, but the quite large 1000base-sx card I have would probably suffocate such a cooler, and I probably need that slot for some more SATA ports in the future. Thus, any aftermarket cooler needs to be dual slot.

Any recommendations on a dual slot aftermarket cooler that will meet or exceed the stock cooler, or does such a part not exist?

My preferred and possibly cheaper alternative would be to just replace the blower on the stock cooler. From my preliminary searches, these following units should all be passable replacements:
-Delta BCB0812UHN-TP09
-DELL H3840
-San ace 109bd12hc2
-San ace 9bmb12p2k01

Any better recommendations for a replacement blower?

Also, the thermal pads on the ram/vrms also look to be pretty borked, so what thermal pads are a good option? I hear sekisui 5760 is good, and digikey has 3m sheets of 5591s at a decent price. Any other suggestions for thermal pads?

This comes with all you need, heatsinks, thermal paste & pad etc. But 3 slotter, each can be had for $70.

I technically don't have the 3 slots available to mount this cooler, since I am reserving the third slot it would take for a future hard drive controller. But, if i was to install this cooler, my concern is that that none of the fans would have any real clearance for airflow, and the fan closest to the PCI bracket would be in a near vacuum.

If this cooler was dual slot, I would have bought it.

Well, it seems from what I read, the stock cooler does not have a real competitor in the dual slot region, so I am going to just stick a different blower in the card. I plan on using one of these. If that doesn't move enough air...

Anyone know if the 5870's reference fan controller can handle more than the few amps that thing will pull, or will I need to source my 12v line from something else?

That blower is just blowing air to the heatsinks and will make your card into 4-slotter. If you remove the stock heatsinks you will have to to install individual heatsink to GPU core, Voltage Regulator and VRAM.

Three options:

1. Replace it with the Artic Cooling.
2. Replace the card.
3. Go for water cooling.

Good lucks with 2 slot custom cooler.

I think you are unclear on what I intend to do. I am not tacking a new blower on top of the heatsink/blower, I am taking the old failing blower out, putting a different blower in, and cutting up the heat shroud to accommodate a different fan type.

For reference, here is a rough model of how the replacement fan will mount:
EVktO.jpg

Thus, the only difference to form factor will be a small bump less than 10mm at around 7 inches from the metal bracket thingy whatever it's called that the video connectors stick through, thus not affecting typical half length pci cards.

It will work if you leave the stock heatsink untouched. It will need enough cool air blowing at it to dissipate the heat from core/memory/regulator.

Thanks
