yeah a cheap MSI p67 with the "OC genie" button would whack the i5 up to 4.5 without any prior over clocking knowledge, its a great feature for the less experienced. Would a 560ti not also be a good choice for the GPU?

i5 2500K @ MicroCenter for $180

Check OCN marketplace as well, some good deals there!

Edit - Also swap out for at least a P67/Z68 board just in case he decides he does wanna OC, you won;t have to worry about upgrading since they OC like a champ.

I figured I'd throw together a cheapasIcanpossiblymakeit PC that will still play BF3 (etc) at decent settings at 1080p. He will never be overclocking well maybe never but at this stage he literally has no idea so he can build too it.

This is what I figured:

- i5 2400 = $199
- ASRock H61M-U3S3 = $75
- WD 3.5" WD5000AAKX = $42
- Transcend 8GB Kit (4Gx2) DDR3 1333 = $40
- Thermaltake Dokker = $61
- Blue LED fan = $12
- Antec Neo Eco 520C = $66
- HIS 1GB 6950 = $232
______
$727.00
$816 w windows

Any better idea's? I wanted to try and keep it more in the >$800 range..

Thanks for helping me, help a friend
In australia, i still satnd by looking for a good price on an I5 2500K even if he is not interested in OCing, but he has the option to if he wants. Also look at G.skill ripjawsx cl9 or cl8 8GB kits, great performers but if he just wants to play games, you could cut cost of ram by using 2 x 2GB ram kits with tighter timmings. Put the savings into the CPU

Go with f3 Samsung sinepoint , Cheapest and best. Most of ocn guys use it and me too 1Tb you will get in $40 i think.

And remove led fan , you will save $12 that wont increase performance.

Thanks for all the advice, I had a fail in the OP and mean <$800 sorry guys.

All valid suggestions.

I know 1600mhz Gskill ram would be better.
I know a 2500K would be better.
I know a better motherboard is ideal.

But to be honest I don't think he is that keen. He used to use an iMac and he wants a PC I just need to do it within his budget.

I totally agree with all those upgrades but I'm more looking at ways to downgrade the cost

Also for those of you who might care I'm using MSY price lists so thats why the options are so limited. And yes he is also Australia, we don't have a very competitive market in terms of pricing. There are a few stores but no Newegg, no TigerDirect and no Microcentre :'(
