Just wanted to clarify this as there seems to be some confusion in this thread about it . Ironic on a computer tech forum that gradeschool math comes into question.
The more you know:
http://www.mathsisfun.com/equal-less-greater.html
And good luck with your friends.
You need help with math & reading apparently lol.

Anyways, get an 2500k and OC it anw, it is so easy, its a no brainer. If you cant in your budget, I would recommend getting a p67 board and a i5 2500. So you can change out the processor next time, which is easier than changing the mobo. I am going to make a guess and say he is using his TV as the monitor? Either way, a 6950 is good enough for BF3, just turn down AA if I have to. Currently, making a rig for my bro with a 560ti and it ran BFBC2 at all high. Tell your friend to never download FRAPS, unless he wants to troubleshoot/benchmark sth as that software only makes you more paranoid

Show him Crysis graphics, BF3, the fun of TF2, torrents, etc.

They do, you just need to use RBE or similar to edit the BIOS. 2 of my brand new 6950 2GBs unlocked, one didn't. It's still not guaranteed but it is definitely possible!

Seriously? You are the one with the maths link.

How does <800 mean larger than 800? Click that link you provided and relearn that part.

Thread Starter
Thanks for the Maths protips guys but this falls under more of a typing error then a maths error, I'm actually fairly proficient at mathematics not so much at the re-reading before I post.

- I don't think he will ever overclock.

I know its hard for you guys to believe but some people just aren't keen for it, not to mention he won't even know what it means. I will be his tech support unless he decides to do his own learning.

- I'm not going to mess around unlocking his 6950 if I got one.

Not my money to be playing with. My own, sure I'd do whatever but I'm not going to do anything not asked of me with a mates card.

I'm more wondering if like for example the i5 2320 is just as good for a bit less, or this is better because... etc

I know this is an OCing forum but show me the conservative in you!

No you did not.

Huge graphical difference.

Man dude that site is seriously limited in what we have to work with, and I applaud you in getting what you could.

The best I could do while keeping some items you found that I don't see for the same prices:

- Transcend 8GB Kit (4Gx2) DDR3 1333 = $40
- Antec Neo Eco 520C = $66
- HIS 1GB 6950 = $232
- Antec 300 = 59 comes with two fans :http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=878
- Samsung 1TB = 59 I assume it's a F2 ECo green and for 17 more bucks you double the size and most likely performance :http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=2519
- i5 2500k = 221
- Asrock e3 G3 = 135 http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=8247

It came out to 812 which is over the budget but it's a much much better build with just the board, cpu, hdd changes, and you can OC for him when you build it (the board also has pre made OC settings that work well I hear) but again over the budget.

Look to be 100% honest people hate to spend money on computers, and PC gamers get a bad image because of doing constant upgrades whether they need it or not. With the changes to HDD, cpu, and mobo he wouldn't need to upgrade for a long long while and in two years time he might be able to drop in a 6 core (I assume by late 2012) IVY in for cheap without needing to upgrade a damn thing.

I think the upgrade path left for him is great, and I know it's more but you came in asking because you want to get your friend into gaming and with the additional 97 bucks spent he could have a great system for years to come. A system that he can upgrade cheaply with a new CPU or a PCI-E card. The alternative is basically be 100% stuck on h61, a no OC i5 2400, and half the HDD space he could use for games, movies or shows.

If I was in your position I would just give him an extra 100$ to get him a much better system that gives him options. When I upgraded to my first 5870 (asus non E6) I gave my friend my Visiontek 4870 and you know what? He loved playing l4d, TF2, LoL,Wow, and Combat Arms with me and NOW he looks at the PS3/360 versions of stuff like Dead Space and Battlefield and is ashamed to have been so blind . If it wasn't for my simple donation of a GPU he would've gone IGP and had a web surfing, netflix, itunes machine and would still be playing console games.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give my 2 cents since I was in your position a while ago. And I kept getting server 500 errors for the last like 30 minutes.

I think "converting" a console gamer to PC gaming can be a mistake, especially if its a good friend. Consider:
1. Expense: from the console gaming experience, can you justify that $800+ gives that much better of a gaming experience? Plus be sure he knows that in 2+ years, that $800 PC won't play the newest games very well.
2. The PC PITA factor: CTDs, lock ups, game patches, OS patches, driver updates, etc. If you are willing to provide free support for who knows how long, go for it.

Face it, PC gamers love PCs first, and the gaming that goes with it second. It's like owning a hot rod car: half the fun is in tweaking it up to see what it'll do. Unless you can sell that angle about PCs as well, I'd call it quits.
