[Anandtech] OCZ's Octane SSD: Indilinx Everest, Up to 1TB in a Consumer Drive - Page 3

Heh, I've worked out I could store nearly all of my currently installed games on an SSD, if I had a 240GB/256GB one anyway, Windows takes up ~16.7GB total and the majority of my games currently installed takes up 218GB, but that's only Fallout 3 heavily modded, yet to put my Oblivion mods in.

And with New Vegas and Skyrim? Yeaaaah.
In my case, a 120gb drive is far from enough unfortunately. I am able to have Windows (or linux) and 5 or 6 of my top used applications and ONE GAME in 120gb. And thats with moving the default storage location of program files, and user folders to a secondary drive. Granted I could probably get by with 240gb...

Also, what about small laptops? Something M11X like perhaps? (if it didn't have that godforsaken hinge it would have been my perfect laptop) In that situation you only have space for 1 2.5" drive, you could go with something like the momentus where you get 10krpm performance at 7.2k battery usage. But even then you only get 500gb (I know - Why you no external hard drive?!) But 1tb in a single 2.5" bay in a laptop could be money (Although right now it literally is)

I agree, can't wait to see some reviews.

my steam folder alone is over 500gb =/

You're not doing it wrong if you want a large ssd for your laptop. I have a 15 inch sager gaming laptop I use for when I travel. It only has room for a single HDD and I have so far put off updating it to an SSD because I need enough storage to have games and such installed. The 480gb version of this drive could be perfect however.

Putting games on an SSD is about as logical as taking an airplane to work everyday. I've said it time and time again, games do not benefit from SSD's bread and butter (IO performance, random read/write, latency). RAID0 is much cheaper if you "need" to load games quicker, as they only benefit from high sequential reads...You'd be much better off getting a <128gb drive for your OS + applications and then having a 1-2tb for all of your other media + games.

And you're wrong about the 10% free. The spare area varies from controller to controller and that area is disabled at the firmware level, so Windows will never see the full amount.

$1000 for one? Hey! Buy these up people, most of you complain SSDs aren't at $1/GB yet, this one is!
I would argue against this. In the future NAND storage will be cheaper than magnetic storage. That combined with the high failure rates associated with dense platters will mean it will make sense for us to use Solid State Drives for everything.

Personally for my uses Solid State Drives are still a few years away from making sense for my rig. The Biggest reason I would switch would be to get something more reliable and cheaper than a bunch of 2TB drives.

Oh gosh...it's a good thing I held off on purchasing the Crucial M4 512GB and then the Intel 320 600GB. That OCZ Octane 1TB looks like it's right up my alley for my needs. I like to wait and see what the competition has to offer though...drive them prices lower I hope

It will benefits a lot for travelling. SSD uses less power than physical drives and offer better protection. You can shake your laptop however you wanted. You won't get data corruptions.

SSDs are big advantage on notebooks.

Not just about gaming. It works well for production environment, video editing, recording. You know it takes up per GB to load video, transfers...
