SLI Setup, URGENT!

Thread Starter
Okay guys, now I have a LEADTEK GTX 580 1.5GB version. Which is the one at below:
http://www.leadtek.com/eng/3d_graphi...lineid=1&act=2

Now, the nearest seller that I can contact, which no longer carry 1.5GB version and she is selling the LEADTEK GTX 3G version, which is the one at below:
http://www.leadtek.com/eng/3d_graphi...lineid=1&act=2

Both cards have same GPU, memory clock, same memory data rate. The only thing that is different is the memory size. Previously I asked around in other forum, the people over there telling me that yes they can pair together without any issue.

Now, I would like to have a safe setup for my rig, so I went to nVidia website to double check with their SLI guide and I found this:
Quote:
Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?
No. For example, an XXXGT 512MB cannot be paired with a XXXGT 1GB in an SLI configuration.
http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_faq.html
Then, I start to do research regarding this issue again. Now there are people saying both card with different memory size can do SLI setup but the 3GB version will force to run in 1.5GB in order to pair with his brother.

Please advise regarding this one, I only want a safe setup for my rig without paying extra for nothing or waste.

Should I get the 3GB to pair with my current 1.5GB
OR
Should I find 1.5GB to pair with my current 1.5GB

Thank you for reading this topic and I really appreciate your help and opinion on this.

If you do that the 3GB card will be cut down to to 1.5GB, the other 1.5GB will be unuseable.

The other option is to sell the 1.5GB card, and buy 2 3GB..

or buy a GTX 580 that is not made by Leadtek. Any normal GTX 580 from any manufacturer can SLI with another normal GTX 580
post #5 of 10
SLIzone hasn't been updated in years. Previously most cards with different memory amounts also had other differences that caused a problem. There are no issues running a 3GB 580 witha 1.5GB, just know that both will be only using 1.5GB.

I'm sorry, but that graphic is just hideous. I would just sell the 1.5 and SLI two 3GB of another brand :-P I don't know what they have over in Malaysia, but it can't just be Leadtek!

Well for LEADTEK brand in my country, which is Malaysia, it is almost 25% cheaper than the other brand. For example:

LEADTEK @ RM1250, got one seller selling RM1099 but too far away from my area
Asus @ RM1800
Gigabyte RM1690
MSI Lightning @ RM1590

Anyway, I just found another computer shop selling the 1.5GB version, hopefully they still have stock else I can't SLI my GTX 580 properly any more. If I purchase the 3G to pair with the 1.5GB little brother, that is a waste.

Called to a local PC shop, they claimed that there should be no problem to run both cards with different memory size. As long as the the specification are the same but just different memory size, 3GB vs 1.5GB, should be no problem at all and so far no customer complain in this kind of setup.

Anyway can clarify on this? Will it cause trouble in the future? If 3GB will run in 1.5GB then probably should be fine for me as if it won't cause trouble in rendering.

Leadtek is crap, sell your 1.5GB GTX and buy two MSI Lightning's 3GB or 1.5GB versions
