when will the performance of the bulldozer architecture take efect

Thread Starter
I was wondering when amd will sort out and optimize the bulldozer architecture. I don't think it's possible that the next wave in the first quarter of 2012. Or could they? Or will we have to wait for the piledriver or what ever the next generation will be named. For amd to sort out the problems, and unleach the performance that the bulldozer should have. I know that they are supposed to release a new batch of bulldozers in the first quarter of 2012, would that be enough time for them to sort out the performance issues, and figure out what is holding it back, or will we have to wait for the next generation entirely?

To me it appears they have many fronts on which work must be done to make the chip work. Relax, the world won't end if it take a year or so to really see the true potential or lack thereof.

Bulldozer is a dog. 315mm2 die, and 2.2 billion transistors. It is beaten by a thuban x6 1100T with only 904 million transistors.

There isn't any fixing this architecture without a major overhaul, even then it looks hopeless.

There are talks of the revised BD with a B3 or some stepping to be launched maybe this quarter or q1 2012 when IB is launched, not sure though.

This is such a strawman argument. the number of transistors is completely irrelevant. Power consumption looking at llano is likely a GloFo issue more then anything.

they could do much to improve performance, we just don't know if those gain will materialize or not.

Either way, I doubt thats what the OP was asking.

The excuse AMD's dished out in reply to the bittersweet performance of BD is that Windows 7 does not have the necessary instructions and scheduler optimizations to fully make use of the Module architecture. These issues are likely to be addressed with the launch of Windows 8.

Since they announced a while back that Komodo will still by on Am3+ (instead of FM2), that is going to be the best architecture to wait for to maximize your motherboard. For now stick with your 975 BE.

Architectures can improve. Look at the performance difference between the first Athlon 64 and the 1100T. My guess is that we will see really nice performance by the third released version of the chip.
