Interesting... I did try alligator-clipping to the PSU fan grate (painted black mad.gif ) and it still shut off. I will try replacing the mobo screws with silver metal screws and see if that helps the situation. The building does have the crappiest wiring, however this has not been an issue with any other system configuration.

if the building has bad wiring, then the ground is probably improper. leading to buildup, rather than discharging, id suggest a surge protector, just as a trial, see if it works

I just tried using a different surge protector (all systems are plugged into APC 1500VA UPS units while being worked on and built). Again, I've also been unable to replicate the issue on any system, and there have been quite literally hundreds of different systems at that station. Conversely, I've also tried moving the system to another location in the office, and achieved the same result. Moreover, the only way I became aware of the issue was through client reports, and those took place at different locations entirely.

At this point, I believe that the building's wiring has been ruled out as a culprit. Thanks again for the input! smile.gif

UPDATE:
Replaced motherboard screws and PSU screws with the traditional silver screws. System still shutting off when exposed to static.

Okay OCN, it's time for me to ask for your help.

The Scenario:
About a month ago, my company began building and selling custom-built desktop PCs to fill a need for our existing clients. The weather recently turned cold, and we've been getting a lot of static electricity buildup. It's been reported several times that plugging a USB device into the systems would cause them to blank the screen, reboot, or shut off.

The Specs:
CoolerMaster Elite 430 Black
ASUS M4A88T-M
Corsair CX430 PSU
Phenom2 955 or Athlon2 255
G.Skill Ripjaws
Corsair Force3 SSD/WD Black 1TB

The Tests:
Holding the end of a USB cable, I walk 10 ft on carpet and touch the cable connector to the edge of the USB port. System shuts off. Repeated test on three other cases with very similar hardware, none of them experienced the same issue.

The Attempted Fix:
http://yfrog.com/nwk9lzmj
I tried to ground out the metal surround on the USB header by attaching an alligator clip to it and running two wires to a ground screw I attached to the case (sanded paint away and everything). Unfortunately, this (a) didn't work and (b) increased sensitivity to static when discharged on the front of the case, which means it was made worse by sharing a common ground.

The Theory:
It seems that the front panel connectors on these cases are of subpar quality. Maybe a ground isolation issue, whereby the static current jumps into the wires that are supposed to carry data?

The Plead:
I need your help. Ideas, theories, etc. I make a living at being the best at what I do, and a problem like this is not what I'd consider "the best". Worst case scenario (ha!) I'd have to swap cases, but that's a lot of work and a huge inconvenience to my clients. I'd prefer to devise a fix I can roll out to the existing systems and implement in future ones.

Thanks, guys. thumb.gif

PS: It's noteworthy to say that I always tap the side of the case before I plug in any device or work on a system. For this reason, I never noticed nor encountered the issue here. This fix is for the systems used by my clients, many of whom do not wish to tap the case each time they plug in a device.

I had this issue and it was due with grounding on the USB and not static discharge. Just wanted to give you another thing to explore as the cause. BTW mine was only on the front panel USBs, all others were fine.

So its pretty much narrowed down to something wrong with that particular case then?

Maybe you can email CM and ask what's up. If its a problem with there case they have probably heard about it already and might be able to assist you.

I blame the cold weather and the carpet.

What did you do to solve it?

Interesting... I just grabbed a new case and pulled the front panel cable out of it. Plugged that into a different USB header on the board and plugged the other end into my existing front panel. Same results. There may be an issue with the static jumping into the data lines through a not-very-well-isolated PCB... ?

That's my next step. This problem seems to be narrowed down to the case's front panel PCB.

I remember in class we have this issue with most every Dell XPS with a USB dock in the front ( Big handful of HP's as well ). Sometimes we would order replacement PCB for that dock and it would arrive with the same issue, sometimes not. Maybe the dock you have has a similar issue? ( disconnect between shield and Mainboard connector pinouts )

I'm reading something now that is explaining this behavior in relationship to the boards connector pinout here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,774.10/wap2.html

Through the psu... If you measure the resistance between the case, and the USB shield, there should be conductivity as all grounds are related. In class we generally end up soldering a wire from the shield to the data ground.
