Those prices aren't retail Apple prices, but retail prices after subsidization by phone carriers, i.e. out-of-pocket price if you sign a contract. If I attempt to purchase a 4S from Sprint.com, these are the actual retail prices they quote:

16 GB: $649.99
32 GB: $749.99
64 GB: $849.99

The final subsidized price matches what you presented initially.

Wow thats alot. So glad I use MetroPCS tongue.gif

Actually $8 for labor sounds about right.... TouchPads were $10.

This obviously doesn't factor in the cost of sheep food for the lines outside apple stores on release date.

People don't understand the millions of dollars that go into R&D even with this small of a change. They still need to sell a hell of a lot of iPhones to break even. They offered iOS5 free to all other users which they had to "port" I guess you can call it to those devices and set up the servers to handle all of the downloads. All smartphones are over priced period. The US government spends BILLIONS on research and development of things that are either useless, don't work, or are obsolete by the time they are finished. Apple has to deal with the same thing on a smaller scale and they will lose some money in this.

I had the opportunity to visit various R&D departments and while I wasn't able to see half of it, there are thousands of people working in multiple countries on the same project which costs some serious money.

And I actually don't like Apple. Go figure lol

Anyone else find it sad that the box and materials cost more then some of the essential hardware?

The only measure of value is how much people are willing to pay for stuff. Consider diamonds, they're just shiny rocks but people pay hundreds of thousands for them.

And they aren't even rare. They are just made of carbon which is ridiculously abundant. Diamond mines are just controlled and only so many diamonds are released each year which makes them seem rare. In reality we could be drilling for oil all over the place but the middle east has a monopoly on it which drives up prices.

It is all supply and demand. If Apple only released a hundred thousand phones the first week you would see them on ebay for $1000+.
