Yes you can

Have to be careful about what ssd you choose however. Some work better than others with the MBP.

Yes you can I upgraded my MBP with 8GB memory, and 7200RPM 750GB WD Black drive - you do need to be careful with the SSD, before the WD drive I had an OCZ Vertex 3 and had constant stuttering which is common, I would recommend OWC (other world computing) SSD or an Intel drive.

I know for the Pro model, you can indeed swap both the HDD and RAM. Only models AFAIK that you cant swap the ram in is the Air.

Edit : Triple ninja'd. Must type faster

Anyone with a 15-17" macbook pro can tell me if it's comfortable/light?
I would look into getting an optibay for your ssd. That way you can keep the hdd in there as a data drive.

If you live near Microcenter, you can pick a 13" MBP up for $1,000

Mate of mine has the 2011 17'' and before that had an older 15''. He says its not uncomfortably heavy, but there is a little bit of weight to it (the 17'') and the 15'' was no heavier than what it replaced (think it may have been a 15.6'' Acer)
