I just built a new system. Specs are as follows:

Core i5-2500k
ASUS P8P67 LE
XFX HD 5570
Corsair XMS3 8GB (4x2)
Corsair H60
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate (and ubuntu on sep. partition)

I OCed my CPU using AI Suite II Auto-Tune to Fast. Then I OCed my 5570 (which I plan on replacing anyway) using the Catalyst Auto-Tune (yes, I'm a fking n00b, I know). Then I decided to OC the CPU to Extreme. Specs are as follows:

BCLK:102.5
Ratio:45
VCORE:1.35

Then I tried running prime95 and, needless to say, it failed. Just shut itself off. Didn't even see BSoD. Shut itself off again randomly while I was watching a movie. Then I went back to Fast setting (103.0, 42, 1.19). Tried prime95 again, failed again, said fk it, and proceeded to install Battlefront II. Battlefront crashed when I tried starting a game. Started fiddling around, went back to Extreme setting, still didn't work, got angry.

Questions:
Should I go back to all factory settings and try again?
Should I run the computer for a while with OC settings and see if it stabilizes?
What settings do you people with a similar MB&CPU setup use?
Should I not use Auto-Tune?
Should I take the computer in to PC EMT and say "I give up; your turn."?
I plugged the H60 pump into the PWR FAN port on MB. Was that wrong? It said any 3-pin fan port. RPMs recorded between 4000-4500. Normal?

If you ever get to the point that you are lost and its not stable at all. Go back to stock. Write down the last stable boot and start back form there and test it.

Try to C another day if you get mad or lost. Just like a level in an FPS that owns you for 2 hours and the next morning you beat on the first try. No one here got the OC'ing overnight.

Check out the Sandy Bridge stickies in the Intel CPU forum.

Ok, start by going back to stock settings (I know, *sad face*). Run prime95 for a long time like that - if it fails (as in, the program crashes, get an error, bsod, just closes, etc) - it would indicate there is a stability problem with your system, unrelated to overclocking. That probably is not the case, but you need to know that first.

You would usually get a BSOD if you had an unstable overclock, so I'm leaning towards asking what PSU you have, just so we may or may not rule that possibility out. Not listed in original specs or sig, so...

What's your PSU?

With you building a new system and overclocking it, my mind first jumps to the PSU not being able to support it. Of course, go with the stock clock and system check first.

I always run stress on a new system before any overclocking just to make sure everything is good. I can't tell you how many times I've built a new system and got a bad ram chip. I've gotten about 4 cpu's that wouldn't pass stress at stock speeds and the VID controlling voltage.

The mother board doing it's own overclocking is just a setup that will work for MOST cpu's and not all. As in the ones that will do 4.4ghz with 1.35v. Well, if yours needs 1.4v, then it wont work for you. You will need to overclock it your self.

Seeing that you have the ASUS P8P67 LE board, don't try to go as high as others with the Pro,Deluxe, or Maximus. It won't last. Take small steps and understand what your doing and you'll get a lot further. No one learns overclocking in their sleep, so if you want to start, you need to read a little or a LOT. Good luck on your venture.

Edit: Diablotek 850W , you may want to invest in a Corsair,Antec, or something a little more reputable.

I don't have one of them sandy bridge processors, but just looking at the auto overclock settings there, it doesn't seem surprising that it was not stable. To have the bclk and ratio's that high, the vcore likily needs to be higher as well. Raising the vcore can be dangerous if one isn't careful, but to have that high of an overclock, I think it would be necessary.

To start over clocking, set everything back to default. Disable SpeedStep (unless you are trying to save electricity ), and just raise the ratio by one. Then test the system for stability like that. Then raise the ration by another one. That's a good way to get started, lots of other fancy things after that.

Go back to stock, boot up into Windows.

Check at the awesome OC guides in the Intel CPUs department and read and get a feel for what you'll need to do for a set clock. Then you'll kind of get the general idea for it, plus you can see where a good voltage is to start for that clock, then start getting where you've got a better idea as to how much volts you need etc.. Every chip is different, so if you vcore don't match another users clock and your at the same clock, don't panic, it's completely normal.

After that, boot into your BIOs and start tweaking. But remember, always, ALWAYS OC from your BIOs! These in-OS OC programs are a joke IMO.
