Need a cable modem

Thread Starter
So, I need a cable modem. Trying to reduce my monthly rate (and by the looks of things, that's all I'll pay too, but that's besides the point). I'm paying more then I expected, and to solve all of this, I need to buy a modem. A cable one.

So, what do you guys recommend? I can pick up a Motorola surfboard cable modem for $60 at Walmart just now (I think it has that DOCSIS2.0 thing on there). I know that it's not the best, but I only have a 5mbps connection. I probably wont be upgrading from there any time soon (as this is the only connection that my ISP offers that I can afford without a bandwidth cap, heck, when I called them yesterday, they told me as far as plans go, I'm right where I need to be), so I don't need that DOCSIS3.0 thing.

Anyway, the modem I found was, or at least looks like this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16825122011

As such, I'll probably order it off of Newegg as it's slightly cheaper there unless I want it before the next billing cycle.

But yeah, recommendations?

I have had that modem for 4 years and it has worked well. I'm in a similar situation with my ISP: I have a 5mbps connection as well. The only time I've reset or rebooted the modem was when I moved back in June.

Thats a solid modem, what I have my parents set up running and they haven't had any issues for the past few months (and believe me I'd hear if there were any).

Well, that's probably the one I'm grabbing.

It also depends on your ISP since you need to make sure your ISP supports the Modem, but also if support customer bought modems.

I work for Suddenlink communications and the only modem I ever recommend for wired connections is the 5101U... just a solid little modem for Docsis2 performance. And the price is right!

I have that modem and so far I have never had an issue for the past few years. I bleive I have had it for 3 years now.

That modem is supported by my ISP, so if I get it, it's all good.

Ehh, while motorola is ok, I prefer Arris. I have one and its stayed on with no resets needed for about 3 months straight with no hiccups. But I believe its one of their bigger models (as in size and probably power consumption).

You might want to check with your ISP to see if they support the brand.

If you can find an Arris cable modem for cheaper then the Mototola, please tell me. I'll look into if it's compatible or not.
