This one is a Zoom 5241 cable modem. Says on the box it goes up to 42mbps, and the date I can find on it is 2005. It's in great physical condition. Doesn't look like it's been used ever.

It's the DPX100, manufactured in december 2002 .

Woo! That was terrible!

Anyway, the modem I grabbed didn't work out. Managed to kill my internet connection.

So, I went back up there, and lucky me, I found a Motorola 5101 for only $10. And in awesome condition! Returned the other modem, plugged this one (which is identical to the one I'm renting), and BAM! It's working! Internet!!!!

Now to get my wireless router working again... It refuses to connect.

You mean you called the ISP and provisioned the new modem to your account right? They don't just work like that with the new Cisco security implemented in the last year. The new security is really really tight now on most US ISP's...

5101's are the docsis 2.o standard. The 8 mb flash chip will choke on heavy torrents. I limit my 5101 to 2 MB/s on Utorrent or it overflows the buffer and reboots. I use a Netgear CG814CCR for torrents as it has a 32mb ram flash and it will easily handle 3.5 MB/s w/o crashing.

The Moto 6120 and the Cisco DPC3000 are excellent choices if you want to cough up the $$$ for a decent Docsis 3 tier but with a 250gb download cap its sort of silly to pay for a 50/10 tier...kinda like having a 911 Turbo that you can only drive 5 days a month...lol

Try cloning your pc's mac address to the router as the Cable system headend binds the mac of the modem to the first device connected to it when it is provisioned with the CMTS and the local node you are on...

I don't use torrents. That doesn't matter to me.

It was a simple process. Just followed the instructions on the ISP site, had the new MAC address associated with my account. If this work out, I'll be returning the other modem to the local ISP office.
