When there's root, there's also unroot. Android devices restored to their stock firmware from a rooted state are indistinguishable from brand new ones; just send them to the carrier or service center, there's no way they can detect root access.

There are however some exceptions. Motorola in all its infinite wisdom decided to put a big huge UNLOCKED text when booting to the phone (circumvented by relocking the bootloader) while Samsung puts a large ! sign on the Galaxy S II as it initializes. Luckily, purchasing a USB jig will remove this icon and thus will nullify those anti-rooting measures.

Yeah, I was just messing with you
I was taking the piss outta some of the people here crying about jailbreaking iPhones.
So I see I'm a bit late to this, I'll join the fun though anyway. I'm not an iPhone person, but it seems to me some of you are pretty knowledgeable so please tell me whether this stuff can be done with an iPhone.

Things I need (or really want) my phone to do/have:

1. Non-grid based launcher. Kind of like SPB was on WinMo, you can inch around your icons and offset them, etc. Regina launcher on android has that at the moment, don't know about iOS. Currently I use ADW with the notification bar and the bottom tray off, i.e. 100% icon/widget space on-screen. Also the ability for different sized icons and widgets is cool.

2. Scaling the interface. On android, I can set the dpi so that the entire interface is smaller. The reason for this is the following: I'm not a 95 year old grandpa that needs a 2x2 cm icon to start up an app. 0.5x0.5 is fine for me. This is one of my main concerns with iOS, is it possible to decrease icon size and have something like 7x6 or 8x7 icons on the main page?

3. I use a dvorak keyboard, so my first download after a new rom install is always multiling keyboard. 4 reasons: 1. Dvorak layout, 2. you can remove the annoying popup letter every time you press a key, 3. you can make the keyboard short and stubby, i.e. keys that are square, not rectangular, and 4. I like the keyboard black/dark blue with orange or red highlighting when I tap a key.

4. On the fly sim card switching (without restart). I have 3 sim cards, 1 is always in, 1 needs to be used once in a while (spontaneously, no time to restart the phone or even start up a second phone) and the last one is laying round in a corner, being ignored...

5. A desktop browser. Opera Mobile 11 with the user agent string switched to recognise the device as a linux pc, full flash and all the goodies.

6. I guess theres nothing you (and the iPhone) can do about this, but I have the original Galaxy Tab, I love 1024x600 and 7"!!! I had a LOT of phones recently, and my Galaxy S was too small, so I traded it for the tab, and never regretted the choice. The best phone I have owned to date, I won't ever take a phone with less than 4" as my main device again.

And, to my knowledge, iCloud is significantly better than anything Android offers right now.

On the contrary, I'd say Apple's market share is pretty good. Keep in mind that unlike Apple, there are many companies that release several smartphones per year running Android but you'll not find a single droid that is more popular than a single model of iPhone, since they have so few.

On the contrary, it's only the 4S and iPad 2 that can do 1080p playback and that's due to the A5.

In the end, I lost all my music, had to re-install IOS, and my iPod is still not Jailbroken. Maybe I was "doing it wrong"

On that note, will the iPhone 4S ( IOS 5 ) be easily jailbroken, or is it already?
There's a tethered jail break, but not an untethered one.

The ten second site? You mean JailbreakMe.com? Isn't that shut down now?

Smartphones are all the same to me. I touch hundreds of them a month at work. Some Android devices do better than others. I'm moving to an android phone soon. The 4S didn't really do it for me and I want to see what else is out there. I'm sure there will be things I'll miss about my iPhone as there will be things I love about my Android.

iPhone vs Android. Can't really compare a phone to an OS. Apple and Oranges ya'know. But this is kind of like the sour candy vs hot candy debate. I love hot warheads not sour and others love sour but hate hot. It's really personal taste.

A few things I do know:
-Any iOS device can be jailbroken. It's the carrier unlocking that's tricky.
-Any iOS device that has been jailbroken or unlocked can be returned to factory state in DFU mode.
-Jailbreaking does not void your warranty, it is fair use. If the hardware fails in a Jailbroken iPhone it's exchanged regardless. At least at the apple store down here that is the case.
-You can purchase unlocked iPhones directly form Apple.

Eww!!! Hot warheads??? Terrible... (your point in a nutshell )

I agree with you completely. The thing is, on a tech site (and in life, I guess) people cant accept this "personal taste" thing. They want people to either come to their side or admit that they are inferior... too bad really.

Just FYI, my Galaxy S II can do native 1080p MKV playback on the stock player even while I was still on TouchWiz.

Also, iCloud may be more polished but it's by no means too vastly superior to Android. We do have Google cloud syncing from Gmail to Chrome to Market apps via OTA. Also, Music Beta is currently doing wonders for me with its seamless streaming through WiFi or HSPA.

The site is up and still works unless you've patched the PDF vulnerability present in certain iOS versions.

Interesting Side note: the jailbreakers had a patch for the vulnerability a day before apple did.

It seems Motorola is wussing out of the unlocked bootloader fiasco that it's placing the decision on the carriers - too bad Verizon's a control freak and would never ever want to unlock it. Surprising that Big Red will be carrying the Galaxy Nexus at all, considering it's a pure Google experience phone with developer mods in mind.

Others are faring much better. Samsung recently hired Steve Kondik aka Cyanogen, which allowed him to release kernel source code before the devices hit shelves. Sony Ericsson is improving relations with the CyanogenMod team and has since openly supported custom ROMs with its Xperia devices. HTC is finally unlocking bootloaders on its recent phones and wwas also kind to release the Beats API to anyone willing to develop it.
