There is no reason for Comcast business... same service with an official static IP for way more money...

I thought Business Class added QoS with Comcast? Has that changed?

Been forever since I had them, and didn't much care for them when I did....but now they look freakin' saintly compared to Time Warner.

I saw no indication of anything business class offers you other than the possibility of a static IP and no bandwidth cap. I'm sure they could configure something on the other end of the line if asked, though.

Also, OP, I was more razzing you than being critical. Subnetting at that level is a fundamental skill which you will need to know for just about everything.

I guess I'm behind then!

I've been looking around to see if Cisco has any online practice tests for routing/switching to get started with

2^2 = 4
32 - 30 = 2 so that is = n

2 ^ n (is number of total hosts)

You have two addresses which have to be reserved: network address + broadcast address.

So 2^n - 4 = Useable hosts.

So you basically have 2 host addresses.

/28
32 - 28 = 4
2^4 = 16
Where two are reserved so 14 useable hosts

Hoped that helped.

people buy business lines for SLA's. I do not know Comcast's business model but most people who buy business class lines need those lines available within a certain percentile of the month. With Residential service they can tell you they'll send someone out to look at your service in 5-7 days and there's nothing in your contract that says they have to do it sooner.

You don't have to have static with any business ISP, but it's an option. Also, the speed i have ( 12/3 ) is the same cost business V res. The reason I'm looking at it is for webhosting of my wife's photography business and digital media ( which means I might step up to 22/5 ). No caps means I don't care how many people are looking at the sites, and I'm not blocked or throttled if I send out 1000 emails on port 25. I already go over the 250 GB cap monthly with hulu and netflix streaming. We don't have cable tv, just internet for streaming media.

A /30 subnet will give ya 4 ip addresses but you can only assign 2 of them for hosts because the other 2 are reserved for network and broadcast address.

So w/e your block is, it will be something like this x.x.x.1 thru x.x.x.4 but only x.x.x.2 and x.x.x.3 will be usable addresses.

Of which, one will be the other end of the link.
Therefore, you really only have one.
