RAM Questions

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
hi,

i have 2 question regards ram:
  1. I bought a pair of Corsair Sticks which are supposed to run @ 1333 mhz but cpu-z says they run at 668 MhZ ***??
  2. Also, on my previous mobo, i had 2 slots and could do dual channel. on my current mobo, i got 4 slots. but they somehow dont work dual channel-ish.. Can they only run 4-channel? cpu-z says memory is in slot 2 and 4, but I swear I put them next to each other xD

thanks

DDR Double data rate, thats why the box says 1333 and you get 668, its normal mate.

2x (2 slots) are paired and should be a different colour those are the pairs that you need to get dual chanel

IE

See thats the 2 dual channels there.

Oh. I see, I ignored the colours lol.

But to the first question, so you mean them both together are 1333 mhz and not each of them? >_>

They are each running at 1333. the number of sticks doesn't change the speed.

668x2=1333
1066=2133

You double the speed because it is DDR (double data rate).

As Andrew said you need to place pairs of RAM in the same coloured slots.

I have 4 sticks of Corsair XMS3 1600Mhz. By default mine ran at @1333Mhz (667Mhz). When placing two more sticks of the same RAM in it wouldn't POST, I just had to set them to Link in the BIOS instead of Auto.

Then just set the profile to XMP which is 1600Mhz (798.5Mhz).

But that's rubbish -.-

Wouldn't it be better if I buy the RAM Sticks separately @ 1333 MHZ. So I could run them @ 2666 MhZ.

Maybe I'm missing the point..

You're getting Double Data Rate (DDR) and dual channel confused. They are two very different things. The reason it shows 668MHz in CPU-Z is because DDR RAM can communicate both ways at the same time, so essentially the effective speed is 1336MHz (in your case). Dual channel just means if you have two RAM sticks installed they can be read from and written to independently since they each have their own line of communication or channel. The number of channels does not increase the speed. Think of the number of channels like the lanes of a highway. Increasing the number of lanes (channels) does not increase the speed limit (clock speed) but it can lessen the amount of congestion (data waiting for an available channel). There are of course more technical and correct ways to explain it but it might be harder to understand and I'd rather not go there.
