A lot of you seem to infer today's iPhone's features and qualities onto the first ones released. Yes, they were pretty sweet, but they didn't really have anything in the way of software at the time and functionally they were just an iPod that could call people with a touch screen.

They did an awesome job, don't get me wrong, but I feel like people grossly misrepresent it.

Secondly, that Motorola flip phone wasn't even remotely close to what you could get for a phone IN THE SAME PRICE RANGE AS APPLE. PocketPC, Blackberries, Palm, there was tons of stuff very similar to the iPhone...just not as slickly packaged and without a cult demographic to "market" to. Those other companies sold devices to pragmatic, business types with no real brand loyalty.

That's really what Apple has going for it in the end. No matter what they make, several million will sell, guaranteed, 100%, no matter what. It gives them the ability to try things that others can't necessarily.

Have a look at this Wiki page: http://ASUS P8P67-M mATX P67 Motherb... network card.

iPaq was around YEARS before the iPhone and did everything that the phone did, except using a stylus.

That was a truly incredible device back in 2000.
Exactly. There were also windows phones with touch screens. The only thing jobs did was get a hold of captive touch screens before anyone else in the industry could have.

I still have an IPaQ and if it were to have a captive touch screen it would be exactly like any modern phone.

...Seriously, even for Apple fanboys, I'm surprised anyone is "glad" he was working at Apple his last day alive.

Are you all forgetting he had a family? I'm sure he did.

What other touchscreen phones were there in 2007? Or even 2008? THERE WERE NONE.

When the iphone was shown, every single company had to play catchup. Every other touchscreen phone after the iphone is based on the iphone in some way. Android itself, wouldn't exist if not for the iphone.

If not for the iphone and Steve Jobs vision, we'd still be using this(the most popular phone of 2006):

There were a shed load of touch screen phones way before iPhone or Android. Even though I never owned one, as I couldn't afford it at the time, my personal favourites were the Sony Ericsson p800, p900 and p910 phones. The p800 came out in 2002. I would have given anything to own a p910, which was released in 2004. It had a flip down pad, that had a dialer on one side, and a full keyboard on the other. Which revealed a full touch screen that took up most of the space on the mostly rectangular device.

Full browsers on your phone???? Though I'm sure someone will be able to show you a device that had it before the iPhone. Do you really think there wouldn't have been a demand for full browsers on mobile devices, if Apple hadn't done it? That is not innovation, it just makes sense.

Apple have innovated nothing. They made a device when the technology was ready and affordable. It was an inevitability and an evolution of what came before. The true innovations came a long time ago, and only now are they ready for mass consumption. Its the same reason we all listen to mp3's now, rather than cassette or CD players. Its why we all have flat screen monitors in everything, rather than bulky CRT's. The first flat screen monitor was invented in 1964, yet it is only in the last ten years that they have proliferated. Because it is only in the last ten years that they have become affordable for everyone.

Exactly, I'm sure the undisputed king of marketing had a firm grasp of how this story would have been viewed.

While Jobs was a visionary and great salesman, his real talent was getting people to work productively and focused even though he was a bit of a tyrant. He was a polite man when he visited my labs at SGI. He had the vision to use the same technology that SGI was using in super computers and put it in the hands of the consumer. Only Apple could do it at that time.

If he was a little bit smarter, he may still be alive today. When he found out he had cancer, he decided to treat it with a holistic approach instead of surgery like all of his Dr.s recommended.. By the time he realized holistic medicine was doing nothing for him,, it was too late to save his life. Very sad indeed.

iDiot.

What he did isn't unique nor legendary. It may be unique to his particular field but it is in NO WAY unique. There are pioneering salesmen in a bunch of different fields that know how to take the complex and make it simple, streamlined and marketable to the masses.

In fact, i think most regular people could have done what he did but are never in a position of power to do it. Many of these CEOs are straight retarded and many of the lower guys in their companies have many great ideas for forwarding the company but are never listened to b/c the company sux

PocketPC has had Internet Explorer since the beginning pretty much.

In fact, you could view PDFs, edit and view Excel Spreadsheets, MS Word docs, EVEN POWERPOINT! Back in the year 2001 you could run PPT presentations on a mobile device...yet Apple are gods cause of what they did in 2007?

The games for PocketPC were light years ahead of iPhone.

I still have my PPC in my drawer as memories. They were UNBELIEVABLE devices at the time. Not a single person played with mine and wasn't completely and utterly blown away by it.

So really, iPhone can eat it. They didn't invent anything, they did a nice job repackaging what existed and a nice job integrating it with capacitive touch.

They aren't living gods...they are 6 months to 1 year ahead of the curve on their best of days.

Lol you people are pathetic.
Really?
It seems the only reason you people are hating on Steve Jobs (R.I.P) is because it's the cool thing to do.
Hah, what are you people even doing with your lives?
All you do is reminiscent about the good 'ole days when amd used to be king and all that junk no one cares about, then go play your games on a GTX 580, which is just money wasted, i'll be running BF3 and MW3, both on the specs that came with my MBP.
I'm using my MBP for school, and making music/DJing, hell Apple made that easier, try using programs like traktor on windows, lol and windows doesnt even have Logic Pro.

And nope, no one else would have come up with the iPhone, iPad, Macbooks and the other apple line up....if they had....they would have.
Steve Jobs and Apple did make peoples lives easier, they made it better, and they did revolutionize computing.
Give credit where credit is due, you people are children.

There are many people who invented things, but really didnt know how to use it, Apple, KNOWS how to use it, and actually make it affordable, and useable to people, thats genius.
Plus Apple, came up with a lot of unique ideas iPad, Macbooks, iMac, iPhones and iPods, hell they made the GUI, and they currently make the worlds most advanced operating system, OS X, heh, hows windows?....whoops, i'll wait for you to restart, you must have had another crash.

Hell, Apple made me better at using computers, i found this website through Apple, since i wanted to know more about computers, lol later i found out most of you people are snobby elitists, well whatever makes you feel better.

wow. so much hate in this thread. this just goes to show that there are people on this board that could care less about anyone else but themselves. and they talk seriously high and mighty and so bad about one mans dream and vision for the world.

how could you hate on one guy so much. how could you devote so much energy to just hate on someone who did what he loved to do. i just don't understand it. i cannot fathom how some of you guys truly live with yourselves.

seriously? laughing because someone else felt that steve jobs and apple touched their lives by bringing entertainment. because jobs brought something to the world that no one else could in the same quality and same way. what could be wrong with people that you would find humor in another humans death in any way shape or form!!!

this entire thread just disgusts me and I've seen/heard a LOT of horror stories. but good gawd... this just saddens me to know what OCN has become these days and the downward spiral of quality of posts lately
