[BBC] - Global warming 'confirmed' by independent study - Page 6

Acknowledging that evidence points towards humanity being responsible for a measurable and anomalous increase in global average temperature does not imply that one is in favor of an alarmist response, or radical political/economic intervention.

You don't need to bury your head in the sand and pretend something isn't happening to not want to restrict individual or corporate freedoms unnecessarily, or to not advocate new taxes.

But hey, it's only a degree of so of change.
Actually, I need to bash my post. The above is a complaint about weather. But it is undeniably getting warmer and dryer in some places in a steady trend where every summer we hit new records for how freaking hot it is.

The problem I see is this.

What can I possibly do about it?

There is nothing I personally can do about global warming. That ball has never been and will never be in my court. Sure I could "go green", but that's simply something I currently can't afford to do. I would love to only use my car to work and ride a bike everywhere else. I would love to go with cleaner sources of energy. I would love to do this or that to "help the environment."

But in the end, what does it matter? I'm one guy, living in a small apartment, with not enough money out of my pocket to even buy the food I need. Even if I could do all of that, it wouldn't matter. Whoopty doo I've achieved a cleaner life style, that's not going to change Person Average Person. Nothing I personally do will change a single thing.

Average global temperature is the key.

A 1C increase in average temperature does not mean everywhere is 1C warmer. Some places will get much warmer, some places will stay the same, and some places will get colder.

Even during the peak of the last ice age, there were several areas that were notably warmer than they were before, or after.

But yeah, anyone who tries to judge global climate change by the local weather being hotter or colder for a season is an idiot.

1-2C in 70 years is a very rapid shift in global average temperature.

We have reasonably accurate climatological data that predates the evolution of humanity...and yes, people have been measuring temperature for well over 200 years. Indeed it's been going on pretty much since the advent of a unified scale for thermometers in the early 1700s.

Deforestation is a minor issue, with most forests being replanted; not counting specific plantations and the chinese scheme.

Ozone depletion was an issue, and is now mostly solved.

Water/soil pollution is a very wide argument, depending on location more than anything.

Precisely: it took a long time with natural changes, and it is far more abrupt with human influences. It's not hard to say that we are affecting this temperature change if the change is more than can be attributed to natural effects.

Precisely: the urban heat island effect has been known for decades. It has a very minor effect that is well studied and compensated for. That's a strawman argument.

The natural warming effects are well documented, understood, and taken into account. They do not explain the current warming trend. Therefore, the warming trend must be influenced by anthropogenic behaviour.

This study simply remeasured what was previously measured. How in the hell does a 1c rise in average temperature prove man-made global warming? It proves the earth, in 430 locations, is rising in temperature slightly..... strike 3
As above.

Lake Travis fluctuates in levels every year, not because of global warming, but because the area it is situated in has various drought conditions every year and the Lower Colorado River Authority makes matters worse by sending water to farmers downstream rather than the lake, which is actually a reservoir more than a lake.

Ok so the earth is ~4.5 billion years old. We have a few hundred years of data and because the temp "rapidly climbed" 1 degree we assume it's caused by us? The temperature on earth has gone though hot and cold spells since its formation. That's probably all this is.

Weather != Climate. The earth is warming at a greater than natural rate. Please educate yourself.
Oh and what is the natural rate for the Earth to warm itself? It did not realize you were on the planet 4.5 billion years ago taking measurements this entire time. Do you have a graph showcasing what the normal temperatures are for the Earth for us to look at? What will the temperature be in 10,000 years?

This. Thank you. 500 years ago we KNEW the earth was flat. Now we KNOW we're causing global warming. I'm calling BS.
