[BBC] - Global warming 'confirmed' by independent study - Page 10

The other factor that people could conceivably not believe is whether it is because of the human presence that this warming is occurring. The vast majority of scientists believe that this is the case, due to the increases in greenhouse gases over the last 100 years or so fitting very well with the observed temperature increase.

The theory of the greenhouse effect also backs this up, so it's definitely more likely than not (hence the general opinion being that this is the case).

Feel free to have your own opinion about this, but at least look at the studies, not just blindly assume it's all a big conspiracy theory.

And get your facts straight before posting. The BBC isn't government owned, it's an independent, autonomous broadcaster. Why do you think it's government owned..?
There have not be a long enough time where data was recorded to determine if there are any patterns and say it is fact. We only have about 150 years of weather recorded and that is definitely not every where.

So if you can honestly tell me anyone can predict that with just 150 years worth of data can accurately tell you what this planets cycles are then you're sorely mistaken.

I'll play along and for a second and let's just say they can. If that's the case then why are the weathermen not 100% accurate everytime. Oh wait that's because the weather can't be predicted perfectly yet. So what makes you think they can say that global warming that's caused by humans even exists?

The earth has both heating and cooling cycles. We're actually in a cooling cycle right now. These cycles take hundreds if not thousands or even hundred of thousands of years to do one cycle. To say that the human race has a significant effect on this is very suspect.

Also to go on the lines of the greenhouse effect. You do realize that there were 100% more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere when then dinosaurs were around. Studies have show that more carbon in the atmosphere leads to exploding population rates in both insects and animals. Along with that creatures generally become much larger as well.

Now I all for reducing emissions and having a cleaner environment. However this is nothing more then a hoax to scam people out of money. Look at those people pushing this to the public the hardest. They all benefit from adding these taxes to us. The people pushing these carbon taxes don't give a crap about the environment and only want your money. For example look at Al Gore, he has private jets, huge compounds, and uses more electricity then probably half of ocn put together and then has the nerve to tell us we need to conserve and cut back. Haha.

Also, all this "smart energy" crap to save energy plays perfectly along with this. Slap the word "green" on it and then mark up the price by 100% with no real benefit.

I mean look at your power bills. Constantly going up with no end in sight. However the price of manufacturing electricity hasn't change nor the processes. So what is the justification for all this? But I digress.

does it really matter if humans are the cause or even a factor? if the temp delta keeps upping like that for another 50 years we r all facked regardless

Not sure if trolling...

Weather and climate oscillations are very different things. Ozone depletion isn't that big of a deal since ozone binding molecules are in much less use now. Water pollution, yes. Water will be a very scarce resource in the near future, and desalinization will be a hot topic. Until then, the world burns.

It's always reassuring to see the "someone's agenda" line tossed into these discussions. The agenda is humanity's.

Well, this study was funded by climate change skeptics, such as the Koch brothers. While verification of the data is good, the conclusions will most likely remain questioned. Intense models, and ridiculously large data sets will take a long time to verify. I just don't get how people think this is a 'wait and see' thing.

Type 1 error: Anthropogenic climate change is true, and we do nothing about it.
Type 2 error: Anthropogenic climate change is not true, and we do something about it.

Which of those two errors is more egregious? I would say the first one.

Exactly. How the hell is 100 years of anything going to change a planet that is 4.5 billion years old.

I'm pretty sure the dinosaurs farting for 165 million years has done more damage to the environment than a species on this planet for 6 million years, with industry for 100 years.

Climate gate is no strawman. There is some serious shenanigans that went on with those studies and a lot of skewed "scientific results" that were swayed one way for a political agenda.

This is the real problem when politics interfere with science. When scientists get paid large sums of money to present the statistics in the favor of their agenda. This happens way to often and really is hurting the scientific communities credibility tremendously.

It's so hard to decipher a politically motivated study vs. Something that is truly independent from any outside source with an agenda.

However these are very grey areas. I just find it sad that people of scientific nature would skew there results just for the money.

Another global warming study... this is why we can't have nice things. Take that for however you want to.

There also is not enough data to say that Mankind's industry is causing the Earth to heat up. The Earth is warming though.

But I still don't care.

Please, please, please enlighten me on this eco-terrorist, anti-democratic, save the whales, green peace party dominated, money driven, oil hating "agenda" you speak of!! Considering the plethora of "shenanigans" that have been mounting from universities, independent agencies, and governments alike, one would think this agenda would be reflected in Washington. Unless the solar panel and wind turbine companies (and don't forget the big scawwy EPA with its 'extensive' political influence ) are plotting to push the fossil fuel energy corporations out of business, the evidence points to an utter disregard of this information by the public and, by proxy, the government.

It sucks that we have to wait for something to happen to take action; that's just how humans are and always will be. Slightly more complex monkeys. But hey, cockroaches will still be around no matter what happens.
