[DO] Sources point to 2013 launch for 'Xbox Next' - Page 2

Owning a Wii + a gaming pc kinda ruins the whole PS3/XBOX thing for me. If I want something novel and different I screw around on the Wii with the wife. If I want serious gaming I hop on the rig.

Dont have anything against console gamers, its just I dont see the value to have them (besides the novelty factor of the Wii) PLUS a powerful PC.

Good, maybe the PC graphical visuals will no longer be held back by the consoles.

Sony/MS are definitely going to want to run with something similar to Fusion chips. Pretty convenient since AMD is working on the next xbox again.

I mean, the new Wii U itself is already 5x more powerful than current consoles since it uses a gpu similar to the 48xx. There's no need to make something as big and powerful as a GTX580 when you can make something small and cheap but still being significantly more powerful than the previous gen.
Hardware is usually set in stone 18-24 months before mass production, so no one is expecting the WiiU to match Xbox Next and PS4; it was meant to compete with current consoles.

If they stick with the same transistor budget as current consoles upon launch, an RV990 spin-off can fit well within a 200w, 260mm^2 chip similar in size to the Xenon chipset.

You would be more credible if most PC gamers could run games that looked generations a head of consoles.... Or if it was even possible to take advantage of the PC's raw performance.

Unfortunately, out of the 1000's of PC games released over the course of 6 years, only 5 or 6 really take advantage of the raw PC grunt.

Like always I am going to wait a year or two before purchasing a new console. Revisions occur, launch line ups aren't always that great, and just need everything to mature i.e. firmware updates, etc.

I might end up grabbing all the new consoles if they have interesting content. I am not holding my breath with Microsoft's exclusive content though... Woo Halo, Gears and Forza! /Sarcasm

My prediction:
GTX 580, or 6970 equivalent. (Sounds like a lot, but this is 2 years from now).
6-8GB of RAM. (Again, sounds like a lot, but when the current-gen consoles came out they had as much RAM as most gaming PCs, also, this is 2 years from now when most people will have 12GB+).
Larger and faster HDDs, and HDDs will no longer be optional.

5x more powerful Xbox would be pathetic considering in 2 years it will be 8 years old. And I wouldn't expect MS to position themselves close to the Wii U, they're going to want to seem more advanced. And there IS a need for a GTX580, and more. Native 1080p@120fps, 3D capable, possible spare GPU power for some GPU based physics effects. I'm willing to be a GTX580 equivalent console with 8GB of RAM and a 6-8 core CPU in 2 years could be around $500, which is the same price as the current gen was at its release, and it sold just fine.

Just depends on the type of person you are. I don't like the idea of missing even a single great game, so I've ended up buying every major console since the original PlayStation (only exception being the Sega Saturn). There are more than enough console-exclusive series for me to justify owning them along with a PC.

I'll usually wait until there's at least one must have game out, or at least announced, but I'll probably hold off on the next Xbox for fear of another RRoD-esque fiasco. Might do the same for the PlayStation 4 as well since I got the YLoD on my original PS3.

But PS3, Vita and Move games will remain the major focus for years
Preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games has begun at several internal Sony studios, Develop understands.
A trusted source connected to the matter has told Develop that various game projects are at very early stages, though didn’t reveal which of Sony’s sixteen first-party studios had been delegated the work.
Guess who else also started working on their next gen console? Next generation console cycle is warming up .

Yes, there are some games that uses most of the raw PC power. Crysis, even it came out 4 years ago is still the best looking game out there. Not many games came even close to Crysis because of many console or PC ports. Consoles are more popular and most game developers mainly worked on consoles' graphics level. No games ever challenged SLI GTX 580 on 1080p, let alone the next generation of GPU. I don't think Metro 2033 which is not well optimized don't even challenge 580s.

2013 seems very likely to me. I know they want to increase things like local storage, online games delivery and other online services, and with competitors launching competing units they have to get something out the door in the next couple of years.

Personally I was thinking they would hold off until 2014 but I think we'll see xbox next towards the end of 2013, in time for Christmas.

Of course as a PC gamer the only reason I care about new consoles is that the ports will look a lot better. Finally.

I can't imagine a large step in hardware right now. In my mind we'll be seeing:
- AMD's take on a custom APU for both consoles in order to keep size and heat down with gaming capabilities staying in-tact. Or, something like their new 7000 series was already locked-in place and a custom model is being planned for the next-gen consoles.
- 4gb DDR4 RAM, seeing as a console should be going for the basic of what current computers are recommended and it's supposed to launch soon.
Usually consoles are pre-planned extremely early, and I wouldn't be surprised if the next-gen consoles are using a custom-tailored APU or the equivalent of a high-end HD 7000 series model.
