[DO] Sources point to 2013 launch for 'Xbox Next' - Page 3

I would expect nothing less than a 6870 performance out of these. Most likely would be next gen fusion chips as AMD is the supplier.

Larger and faster HDDs, and HDDs will no longer be optional.

5x more powerful Xbox would be pathetic considering in 2 years it will be 8 years old. And I wouldn't expect MS to position themselves close to the Wii U, they're going to want to seem more advanced. And there IS a need for a GTX580, and more. Native 1080p@120fps, 3D capable, possible spare GPU power for some GPU based physics effects. I'm willing to be a GTX580 equivalent console with 8GB of RAM and a 6-8 core CPU in 2 years could be around $500, which is the same price as the current gen was at its release, and it sold just fine.
Maybe if they decide to take a gigantic loss on each console. Even in two years, I highly doubt those parts are going to cost $500 in a PC build, much less a console that has way more overhead than just parts (labor, etc.). Even taking a loss on each console, they'd have to charge more than $500.

You obviously never compared Oblivion on the platforms, PC was better from the time we could actually max it out. (ie. 7950GX2 or 8800GTS/8800GTX)

Eh, it's starting to happen now, it's a cycle, around the end of the current gen consoles lives PC games start to really show off their grunt, then the consoles catch up and it begins again. (Happened with the PS1 and PS2)

They did not, most gaming PCs had 1GB or 2GB in 2005/2006, even my budget Athlon XP/6800GS system had 1GB...And the devs had to fight for 512MB in the 360.

Considering shader power isn't scaling that well compared to what games do these days, I see APUs being used to conserve power, maybe 4GB RAM (If we're lucky) shared between the CPU and GPU and most likely around 800 GCN shaders if they use AMD (As opposed to VLIW5, so it'd be faster than a HD5770/HD4890) or 216 shaders if they go nVidia, as well as as an Stars quad core on 32nm, kinda like how the Xbox had what was practically a Coppermine P3, but customized.

I don't see either MS or Sony going too big on the hardware, they did last generation and most of it didn't get used well and just cost them heaps compared to Nintendo.

Didn't it come out some time ago that the next-gen xbox would have roughly the equivalent of a GTX 560 in it? Pretty sure that was well documented. But then again, my mind has been quite scrambled lately. Could be off.

I'd imagine by 2013 even SSD's still won't be a viable option as the price per/GB would be too high. What I would like to see however is something like SSD caching for game saves and such. I also would appreciate a higher audio codec for game chat.

Meh. GTX580 Equivalent? Are you kidding me? Maybe a 6850 equivalent at the most. Then, add a nice quad core. Then, you are done.

I think the point he's making is the 580 equivalent in two years will be in the mid-range like the 6850 is now, and they'll probably use a cheaper card with better optimization to achieve that effect. He's not saying they're going to stuff a power-hungry 580 into a console, just equivalent performance in 2 years time.

Don't forget these things are made to run a whole generation of games (5-10 years), a GTX580 might sound like overkill for a console, but after 2-3 years of the console being out people would be glad that they went that far. Same with the 8GB of RAM, when the 360 came out people thought 512MB of RAM was plenty, but years later developers were complaining that development was largely hindered by lack of RAM/VRAM (and no HDD on the 360).

It'll be better than a gtx 580.

The gpu that went into the xbox 360 was actually decent for its time: x1900 family. It will probably have either 7000 or 8000 series of gpu.
