If it's really that fat, it should be filling the bloated space with a beefier cooling system.

If not, Microsoft needs to perform an emergency delivery immediately before it explodes.

The highest end GPU from that era only had 512-768MB of RAM where 768MB was an absolute rarity. Expect next gen consoles to ship with 2-4GB of RAM.




Both consoles are pretty much maxed out by developers because it only takes 2-3 game generations for it to occur, or at least that's been the tradition and has been espoused by different developers.

PS3 has a higher theoretical maximum than the 360, but since Microsoft has far superior dev tools in XNA and Visual Studio, they're able to maintain visual parity and even come out a head in many games.

Next gen, the Xbox will be even closer to what can be found in the PC space. MSFT originally wanted to go with an OoO chip but IBM couldn't deliver in time.

Just think of the GPU that can fit within a 200w TDP in 2 years. Expect a high-end RV990 or a mid-range RV1090.





What you're saying is not consistent and is very contradictory. Why would developers target enthusiast hardware(GTX 580) when the overwhelming majority are not enthusiast. If consoles are 'holding back PC' then your very own platform mates are holding back PC as well.

What's more is that it takes ~3 years to develop a game from start to finish and we get new PC hardware every 18 months. How is it viable for a developer to cater to the ever changing PC hardware landscape?

I'm done with consoles.

I spent over a grand on my 360 & PS3 & what few games i was interested in; and spent maybe a combined 100 hours playing on both. $10+ an hour is not a good value for entertainment imo. I'd rather go see a movie.

Same here, I had a PS3 and a 360 but I sold both because they just gathered dust, the games are on average $20 more expensive here so any costs I incurred on hardware upgrades are soon made up by the game cost with the controls and graphics being far worse.
Now, I'm all for gameplay over graphics but there's one thing I can't stand and that's not running at a native resolution, it makes everything all blurry and ugly, consoles suffer from this really badly. it's why I keep a old (small) CRT SDTV for my PS1 and PS2, they look somewhat decent on that (Great, in the ways I care about which is art style and resolution versus the TV) but on a LCD they look insanely ugly.

Consoles have only one pool of memory for vRAM and OS. The 360 dedicates 32MB of it's totally 522MB to the OS; where PS3 dedicates slightly more.

Besides, gaming has little to do with how much main memory you have unless you have below the minimum required for the OS to function.

The pro of consoles is that developers can ignore the API and program directly to metal. Both consoles are capable of tessellation(PS3 has Polymorph; 360 has a dedicated tessellation engine). We've seen a few examples of tess. on 360 despite having an API that's not capable(Dx9c). That's because that code is probably a lower level than the API is.

I simply don't believe that consoles are holding back the PC in any way. Especially when the PC hardware, PC API, and PC games are not on the same release schedule. They're often years apart and it just isn't viable to delay a game for 18 months to take advantage of the latest features.
