i have a question about my mobo and ssds

Thread Starter
My friend told me that mobos use an Intel sata contorller and a Marvell sata controller. He told me that the Intel data controller will run my ssd faster.
He also said that the Intel controller is only a sata II controller.

So my question is.... my mobo specs from newegg list 5 SATA III ports and no SATA II ports. Does that mean I only have a Marvell controller?

My mobo is a MSI 890gxm-g65

Also, is it true about the SATA II Intel controller being faster than the SATA III Marvell controller?

Thanks in advance!

Well you don't have any Intel sata ports XD. Use the native AMD ports. Check your mobo manual and use the most upto date drivers. The marvel ports suck for SSD's b/c they don't support trim.

Hmm well that stinks. My manual says that I have "5 SATA 6 Gb/s ports by AMD SB850"
Will intel sata ports be faster than my current ports? If so, will i notice a difference? Can i get a pci-e card with intel sata ports?

Also, windows says it has trim enabled, so that means it is working right? is there anyway to test it?

No. The AMD ports are perfectly fine. Marvell vs. Intel is completely irrelevant for AMD boards.

You installed windows with sata set to IDE mode. You need to change it to AHCI. Here is how:

(1) Exit all Windows-based programs.

(2) Press [Win] + R or take the RUN option from the start menu.

(3) Now type regedit there and press Enter Key to open up the Registry Editor Window. (If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.)

(4) Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Ser vic es\\msahci

(5) In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.

(6) In the Value data box, type 0 [3 is default], and then click OK.

(7) On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

(8) Restart your computer

(9) Go to BIOS and enable AHCI, Save & Reboot

(10) Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.
