Think of the number of people who pre-ordered through Origin that are all trying to pre-load BF3.

I started my pre-load in the morning and it was going at 1.7MB/sec, about an hour later the servers were only giving me 200kb/sec due to the load on the server.

5mil users daily on Origin when BF3 isn't even out... I'm skeptical.
I went over their numbers and they got to 9 million on BF BC2 but they got the last 4 million on 7 buck and 9.99 steam deals and they did most of the heavy lifting during summer school break. Given the number of unemployed and the free beta thing It's possible. But they spit out the free beta thing right at the end of the month. The steam thing is weird. EA contracted another distributor which steam balked on. But nobody is talking about what it's really about and what really went down.
My guess is they think they have enough momentum on enough titles to lift off with knights of the old republic.
They are technically bankrupt and in "restructuring" the restructuring involves moving from boxed sales to digital distribution.

These games are pretty prefab. You can reuse alot of animations and code and you only have to make the maps and world. But the bottom line is if old republic doesn't make money they are in more trouble and have to lay off.
Margin compression on them is hurting bad as 10 bucks for a game doesn't leave much wiggle room for overhead costs and old republic got margin compressed like crazy from 59.99 limited edition no sales version. If that things at 10 bucks this time next year they are dead meat.

Still not as bad as sony though which will likely sell off sony pictures next year and have a horrible restructure on sony online entertainment. EA didn't even make back the last couple years worth of losses but at least when they were losing it wasn't so dramatic as to cause an instant toss like sony pictures is going through which went from worrying losses to OMG this year.

It has nothing to do with being delusional - people actually like it for valid reasons.

In terms of features there are dozens of very useful ones (maybe not useful to you but clearly useful to the millions that use it); namely Gifting games which is so huge they've even included a trading system recently which takes advantage of this. There's also the ability to join a game that your friend is playing from friends list..
I use these features without even thinking and take it for granted. There are dozens of other unique perks to it too like Steamworks, screenshot capture functions, brilliant sales (mostly unmatched) and few others.

What has Origin got? Sure they have a better download management feature.. but that's all I can highlight. Also Download speed is an irrelevant reason, as it varies from person to person, depending on where they are located and what game they are downloading - Same as Steam!

Ultimately, Valve hasn't directly done anything bad to its customers in all the 5 years I've been using it (unlike other companies - including EA). And before you start, I am not a fanboy of Valve... I actually prefer CD Projekt more than any company out there and there's a reason for that!
I treat these companies just like I would a person: If I get respect from them, they get respect from me.

Can you remind me what has Valve done that's so bad for gamers?

- I haven't seen them buy small studios and then shut them down.
- I haven't seen them purchase exclusive sports rights because another company started to make a superior product (NFL 2k was better than any Madden game).
- I haven't seen them push $60 price tags down the throats of gamers everywhere for games that simply don't meet that price point in terms of quality.
- I haven't seen them push DLC for micro-transactions to buy product already in the game. For example - the Godfather game they sold weapons and ammo.
- I haven't seen them run the cash-cow mill and force a recently bought studio to rush out a sequel to an amazing game knowing full well the game was going to be absolute garbage. Doing so because they knew they could achieve sales by riding on the still fresh success of the original game.

And you wonder why people hold respect for Valve/Steam...

P.S let's see if you can guess who did all the points above

I hate to break your genius bubble aswell, but 8 million people includes all platforms.
Double posting like a boss.

Not the actual products, no, what they stand for however...

Steamworks in only a bonus for anyone who cares about those server browsers or friends lists.

People who want to play Metro or HL2 to finish the story aren't going to benefit from server browsers or friends lists (unless they REALLY like chatting while playing single player games).

I also didn't say there was anything wrong with having a preference, its just that its stupid for certain people (mostly delusional fanpeople) to be against publishers having their own clients, when they are supporters of publishers having their own clients.....until the water supply they've been urinating in finally turns their tap water yellow.

Bit too late to start that moaning now.
Ah, I see you've been making the rounds in another origin thread... ok, time for my reply.

1.And you think that doesn't matter to some people? Steamworks is very important for me, I'm often talking to people no matter what game I'm playing, or what time it is and joining multiplayer games with friends all the time. What's wrong with not wanting the market to be fragmented and therefore make this a lot harder? Sure I may not be everybody, but I'd be willing to bet most people like having some of the features of steam and steamworks.

2. What's wrong with being social? Even if it's a singleplayer game? All steam really is is another form of DRM that, admit it is very effective. Sure you could argue that EA has every right to do this, but look at their track record compared to valve, which frankly is perfect. I'm almost certain they'll screw us over somewhere along the line.

Feel free to call me a steam fanboy or whatever but really, it's a far superior product(you could say it's going to improve but I doubt it) and it isn't set up by a company that often is called the devil. And the biggest problem with this? Other companies are going to follow EA's lead, and the market will get even more fragmented. That's what I'm most worried about, I don't want to be running 5 glorified download clients on my computer to play my games.

The Origin client is a pile of junk.

I have two games on it, three (Maybe four depending on whether Skyrim is on it or not) come October 26.
Hardly a fanboy, but I can admit it sucks.

Skyrim is Steamworks.

I do have an Origin account (from EADM) with 7 games. I ended up not using it though.
