Read this article, "It is interesting to note that Sennheiser created the HD555, the HD558, and the HD598 out of the same driver and the same frame design. " and the HD555 and HD595 sharing the same driver you know about. I cannot confirm the validity of the article but I do know that headfonia is a fairly large website dedicated to headphone enthusiasts.

I have seen this article, but that does not constitute enough evidence for me, specially with new and old headphones reportedly sounding so different.

Well, I jumped on the HD558 deal at FS. I can easily return them to my local store if I don't like them, something I can't do buying from most places.
