All this laptop talk got me thinking, so I asked the folks what they'd prefer. They really like the laptop idea. The only issue is that they have a 20" monitor at home they still want to use, but will take the laptop with them on weekend trips. The Acer docking stations take us beyond budget, are there any other cheaper options to easily hook a laptop up to it and a mouse/keyboard?

Can you teach them the right ports to plug the monitor / mouse and keyboard into? That would be the cheapest option

Have you considered the low-end Sandy Bridge chips? According to AnandTech, the Intel Pentium G620 (2.6GHz Dual-Core) beats the Athlon x4 645 in everything but core-intensive tasks. There's also a 2.8GHz and a 2.9GHz model. Much, much lower power consumption as well. Edit: Just though I'd mention that if this is being overclocked, then the AMD chips will win out over the G620.

And if you're sticking with integrated graphics, I'm pretty sure that the Intel's HD 2000 is better than the Radeon HD 4250 with the Athlon.

Whipped this up real quick -

CPU/RAM ($99.98): Pentium G620, PNY 8GB DDR3-1333
Mobo ($84.99): Biostar TH67+
PSU ($34.99 after rebate): Corsair Builder Series CX430
HDD ($69.99): Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000.D 1TB 7200rpm
Case ($39.99): NZXT Source 210
Optical ($18.99): Sony 24x DVD Burner

Shipped: $367.92
After Rebates: $357.92

If you want a bit more power while bending the $400 line slightly, then you can upgrade to a i3-2100 and some new RAM.

Shipped: $412.92
After Rebates: $402.92

If you still want the 8GB RAM for the i3-2100 version, this one is only another $10. RAM is so cheap right now!
