Buying a new 6950

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
So after having no luck unlocking the shaders on my Sapphire dirt3 model, I decided to sell my card to my friend and buy a new one.
Unfortunately im in australia so range is limited :/

But if you could tell me which of these is most likely to unlock it would be great

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...cPath=193_1179
http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf (ctrl+f search for VGA)
http://www.pcdiy.com.au/catalog/part...?CategoryID=77 (search for 6950

Thanks

Honestly I'd keep the card and not worry about it. The 6950 is a great card and there are to many issues with trying to unlock them.

you will have to buy a reference card , with dual bios switch .

mine unlocked perfectly with 6970 bios and has been like that + overclocked for almost a year . It would be a much better performing/quality card than the dirt 3 edition .

try get a sapphire reference 6950 2GB , im in sydney i bought mine from ... http://www.jw.com.au/ati-hd6000-series-c-169_32_140 .. i think they have some left in one of the stores .. the prices are outdated so best calling them .

goodluck

For the gains this provides, I am rather surprised at the work people put into doing this. Yes, the originals unlocked easily and when available, I don't blame people for looking for them. It seems like these are rare at this point, yet everyone is still banking on it as a certainty. Get a 6950, enjoy its power, OC it a bit, and play.

Klinkey,

Have you considered just actually buying a HD-6970 that way it's 100% guaranteed and already unlocked for you I know it's a bit more $ but it might be worth it if that's what you're really after and won't be happy with another HD-6950 that DOESN'T unlock !

Anyways, IF you insist on trying to find one to Un-Lock and want your best chances here's the list from what I've been able to come up with as a BEST educated GUESS after researching when buying my HD6950 the likelihoods of unlocking IMO is something like this ...

Chances of UNLOCKING Non-Referenced HD-6950's ;
ULTIMATE 99.9% = OLD Original REFERENCE cards = THE BEST w/ almost 99% chance of success, however also almost 99.9% chance you CANNOT find a NEW one of these can maybe buy USED.

BEST = Sapphire TOXIC edition @ about 66-75%+/- {w/ just a simple DUAL BIOS Switch flip, can also be FLASHED safely IF Needed}

VERY GOOD = MSI Power Edition/OC TwinFrozrIII @ about 50-55%+/- {w/Dual Bios Switch, can also be FLASHED safely IF Needed}

FAIR/GOOD = Asus EAH6950 DCUII/2DI4S/2GD5 edition @ about 40-45%+/- {w/ FLASHING only, NO dual Bios Switch on the ASUS, It has a switch but it's actually a DVI/Display-Port option and is NOT a BIOS switch}

GOOD = Sapphire DIRT3 edition @ about 33-40%+/- {w/ Dual Bios Switch} (I've seen reports all over the map about its unlocking potential, especially now with the Antilles GPU Bios on so many of them, so?)

FAIR/POOR = PowerColor AX6950 2GBD5-P22DHG ++PCS edition & PowerColor AX6950 2GBD5-P22DH ++PCS edition @ about -30% {w/ Dual Bios Switch and/or FLASHING the card}

FAIR/POOR = HIS 6950 IceQ X Turbo X 2GB H695QNX2G2M @ about -30% {w/ FLASHING or Dual Bios Switch ?}

POOR = Most XFX, Diamond, VTX, VisionTek, Gigabyte and ALL Other HIS, PowerColor, MSI, ASUS, Sapphire cards NOT mentioned by Named Edition/Model# above @ about -20% {w/ FLASHING only NO DUAL BIOS switches on ANY other cards not named above}
Disclaimer Note: Your result may vary

ONE last thing ... just say NO to ALL 1GB HD-6950 cards ... I mean really ? why bother ? the savings aren't THAT much. I read people say just buy a good over clocker and that unlocks aren’t much of a gain anyway (Then again I've also read that gain can be as much as 9-10%, so ?) … Well, but why NOT do BOTH ? with a Card like the Sapphire TOXIC edition or the MSI PE/OC TFIII edition you get great Factory OC'd cards that ALSO have a DUAL BIOS switch that gives them a Very Good Chance to UN-Lock the shaders as well ... thus making both cards about the next best thing to buying a true HD-6970 {almost 100% identical} ... and you still Over Clock both cards even past the Factory OC's ... they're really remarkable cards for the money!

This this is a fantastic, helpful and accurate post (+rep). If you take this advice and follow the recommendations I am sure you will be pleased.

Also I have to believe the toxic and twin frozriii editions have to be available down under as they are the 2 most popular versions of the hd6950.

good luck!
