WC New Guy

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to water cooling but decided to give it a go. I don't have a lot of money to spend, but I'm getting a lot of equipment from a friend. I'm buying his case and WC equipment for WAY too good of a price to have turned down (cheaper than a HAF X). His thread is here. I'm not getting his GTX470 or GTX470 water block (if any of you want the water block, though...PM me!). Other than that, I should be getting everything. This is a list of the equipment I'll be getting:

Quote:
Black Ice Pro III Compact
MCR320
OCZ Hydropulse 800L/min
EK Supreme HF Full Gold
Swiftech Micro Res
3x Scythe Ultra Kaze 3000 RPM
3x Thin Medium Speed Yate Loon (D12SM-12C)
6x Medium Speed Yate Loon Std (D12SM-12)
2x EK Compression Fitting
3x Koolance 3/8" ID Blue Tubing
The problem I'm having is this: I have spent a lot of extra cash to make sure that I keep all blue out of my case. Also, my PSU is sleeved in Red and Black. His tubing is blue. I'm thinking about swapping out tubing colors to match my scheme more accurately. Also, he's using mostly hose clamps (worm-screw style) and I want that to change. My concern is if I buy hosing of a different diameter I can't use his compression fittings...but I can buy other/cheaper ones. Also, they'll be more uniform and I can sell off the old ones. The other thing is design. I am probably going to change his setup. Now, for those of you that claim overkill: I know, I know...but I'm getting all of it and a 700D for less than I could buy a HAF X. The reason I'm looking at changing his setup is because I kind of want the 800D side panel and I don't think my PSU will fit where his is (mine is really long). Also, his computer is really loud so I'm looking at a fan controller. He's using nine fans, I'm donating three of the D12SM-12 fans. His Ultra Kaze 3Ks are REALLY loud, and I have a feeling I won't need THAT much cooling for my CPU.

Edit: I plan on getting a GPU/waterblock around Christmas.

Wow, that's a pretty nice deal. For tubing I would probably go black myself, this primochill LRT black tubing it's too expensive.

Are you planning on keeping both radiators in? or are you removing the bottom one to make room for your PSU, I guess I wasn't clear on your OP. I would definitely get rid of those metal hose clamps too.

Looks like it should be a fun project to under take.

I'm really not sure what to do with the radiators, TBH. One of the radiators is damaged (screw hole) but was fixed. I was considering selling the good one to fund parts. The other couple of options are modding the case to fit the rad elsewhere OR stack the second radiator on top of the first one (on the grill up top where the case is designed to fit a 360mm rad). If I keep the second radiator, I wouldn't really know what order to put the lines in. Another option is to change the color of my case, but I have no idea what that would be!

Newb question, but any idea how to estimate how much tubing I'll need or should I wait for the case?

Also, I hope it's fun. I'm in Aerospace Engineering at Virginia Tech, so all this tinkering is right up my alley.

Yeah, I'd wait for the case to come in before you go get the tubing. Just to be sure. You have got a nice loop though

I was offered a GTX470 and water block for $180. Is it worth it to me or should I just go air and look for something on eBay?

If someone offered me a 470 alone for $180 I would snap it up.

Thanks for the advice, and you make it sound like fact. However, it's a generation old and it's about to be two generations old. Any differing opinions or is this pretty much a fact?

Let's just say this: I just yesterday bought a GTX 470 alone for $245.

Well, I bought it. I transferred the cash already, I'm picking it up Tuesday night. I should have everything ready to go by Wednesday night including some benchmark runs. Also, I just saved WEI screenshots from both of my old configurations (stock clocks, 4GB ram to OC'd and 8GB ram). We'll see how that changes. I know my overall won't change as I've been HDD-limited and I'm not getting an SSD just yet, but the subscores will interest me and hopefully some of you will find some use for the scores.
