*new* nec pa241w

Thread Starter

After receiving an NEC PA241W with pretty bad backlight bleeding as well as a hot teal pixel on the middle of the screen, I had it returned to NEC.

With not much arguing, they returned the monitor and refused to refund my initial overnight shipping charge (which was fine).

My new one came today:

^ The flickering did not occur in real life, but that vertical yellow line on the right is certainly there and brighter in person.

I could have sworn you people told me NEC had some form of quality control? How upsetting...

I asked for a third, but I'm honestly debating whether I want to just get my money back and double up on an Eizo. I suppose we will see if they ship me a third one, overnight for Saturday AM delivery.

Just return it and get two more U2410's.

I had to return my first U2410 when I got it as well for 10 dead pixels in the lower right corner.

They got it right the second time though...

That shouldn't be *such* a common issue though... it's not wide spread either. NEC clearly has QC issues with this particular model, I wouldn't go for it again. Dell's wararnty is great and the U2410 is a great panel. If you can afford 2 more, which by your sig rig I'll assume you can, then go for it. BTW are the 580's 3GB or 1.5?
Also, I would make sure you don't have corrosion on those EK blocks once in a whole (unless they're copper).

Thanks.

The 580s are 1.5 IIRC. I bought them in late March. They do not have DisplayPort (pretty stupid imo for a $500 card) - but I've been complaining too much lately so I'll stop. ^_^

All blocks are copper and acetal so hopefully shouldn't have any issues there. Tbh, the watercooling seems to be the most stable part of the PC as of late. :/

I was considering another 2 U2410s but now that I got the NEC, I just want one that works. It appears to be VERY well built - and honestly the colors are nicer and more flush than the Dell, but I just can't find one without an issue. This will be NECs last chance. The blacks aren't as dark from what I have seen so far (which isn't saying much) but they're more natural looking.

NEC support seems to be very good...but I don't know how they can stay in business this way. They're overnighting me another monitor for Saturday AM delivery.

Try it. I would never be able to have two similarly sized monitors of different brands, it's my perfectionism
Shoulda gone 6990 CFX then

Not a big ATi fan myself. Perhaps I should have got the MSI 580. Maybe I'll just get the new 6 series.

I would consider that more OCD. I'm actually the same way. I can justify this purchase by telling myself I'll get two more later on when I get the money - but by the looks of this I don't know if I'll even waste my time now.

Up to you really, I mean... just see if the third monitor works fine and if not, get a refund.

PA241W should have better blacks and contrast than the Dell U2410.

Have you played with the ColorComp setting in Tag 1 of the Advanced menu?

These are complex screens and take a while to figure out. I'm not claiming I can tell whether it has issues or not, but you need to sit down a few minutes with the manual, get to the advanced OSD and start hacking around.

Is the yellow line visible in all picture modes?

Is it angle dependent? I can't tell from the videos.

One thing I mentioned to you on [H]ardforum as well xyeLz, is to keep all your posts in one thread. By constantly creating new threads you will: - Miss important info in a previous thread you created, clutter up the forum, make your life, and everyone else's, more complicated.

Dell's blacks appear to be darker. NECs blacks appear to be a more natural (appealing) black whereas the Dell looks like black plastic. NEC has a more uniform black when viewed from multiple angles - or from what I remember.

Have you played with the ColorComp setting in Tag 1 of the Advanced menu?

No. I will not mess around with any detailed settings until I receive a monitor without an apparent hardware issue.

I hear you. Once I get one that I like I will take the time to perfectly configure and calibrate it.

Is the yellow line visible in all picture modes?

Yes. It is also still visible in teal with a black background and yellow on a white background in all display modes.

Is it angle dependent? I can't tell from the videos.

No. The yellow is visible from all angles. The teal is very hard to see without looking closely - the top of the line has one brighter pixel. It looks as if someone stabbed the monitor to make an impact from behind and dragged the knife downward to create the line. The camera does not show anything well, but I took the videos more for NEC than for the forums. The backlight bleed is also visible at all angles.

I saw. I appreciate your input. I keep all of my posts in bookmarks so I can go back and forth. I definitely make a lot of posts, sorry. I try to keep anything relatively different in a different thread. I'll keep it to a minimum. Thanks.
Hope this helps.

Edit: The serial number for both monitors were only three numbers apart. Perhaps it could be a bad batch such as the issues Dell had with the early U2410s?
