I5 2500 is rendering faster than 2600k OC'd - Page 2

Ok, so Acidbath is definitely on to something. When I enable 1 core, the I7 is faster (34FPS vs 24 FPS) When I enable four cores on both, they both perform ~50 FPS. When I enable 8 cores for the I7, it drops down to 40 FPS. CPU utilization is 17-18 on the I7 (using 4 cores) and 40-50 on the i5. With 8 cores, CPU utilization fluctuates between 19-28.

Thanks for looking into that affinity stuff. I surmise that two things are happening with that particular encode: an I/O bottleneck at about 50 FPS and thread collisions when running hyperthreaded. I've noticed with my i7 860 that MPEG2 encodes that completed choked my old dual core rig at close to 100% CPU utilization now run at no more that 50% on my 860 (it's stalling waiting to read/write the footage). As mentioned, try different encoders that scale well in a hyperthreaded environment.

any recommendations on encoders? I tried a random H.264 encoder with worse results.

Are you sure the encoder can use up to 8 threads? Most free programs won't scale to all available cores/threads.

Trying Acidbath's rec's now.
Wouldn't this mean you have an unstable OC?

I don't think so. Temps never exceed 65 degrees, no bsod, things seem to be running fine. I'm not sure what is causing the throttling, though.

-any recommendations on paid encoding programs that would take advantage of the virtual cores?
