GTX 580 reference safe voltage?

Thread Starter
Hello OCN,

i've started to OC my msi gtx 580 twin frozr II (which is reference design) a bit. The accelero extreme plus II cooler is on it right now, together with the vrm and ram heatsinks that came with it.

I'm currently stable @ 920/1840/2100 @ 1.1V. Now the card does coil whine a bit more than @stock clocks but I can only hear this when my ear is next to the card.

If I notice coil whine does it mean I have to stop the oc and back down a bit? Or doesn't it hurt the card at all? I don't want it to break in a couple of months, if you know what i mean

is 1.1V a safe 24/24h voltage? Up to what voltage can I go?

Thanks!

anyone else got an opinion? Is it safe to go over 1.1V?

What do your temps look like?

I think it's safe at 1.1v. On air cooling, I'd go up to 1.15v as long as temps look good.

67° is the max gpu temperature i've seen, usually it's around 65° maximum.

No idea about vrm/mem temps though.

Does GPU-Z read your VRM/mem temps?

GPU temp looks fine to me, so my opinion stands: 1.1v is safe. I'd go up to 1.15v to see how high of an OC it can do for benching but that's me. For gaming, I think your current clocks are sufficient.

Coil whine is fairly typical. My GTX 580 doesn't have it but my 480s and 470s do; been running them at max available voltage since I got them over a year ago and they are still rock solid.

It doesnt read ram or vrm temps sincr its reference design.

It does have the vrm and ram heatsinks that came with the accelero extreme plus ii. Cant i assume that theyre more than well cooled enough in order for a somewhat higher oc (higher than 1.1v 24/7) ?

1.1V is the limits for air cooling.
