Friends laptop from hell..

post #1 of 8

Hi all, i said i would repair my friends laptop as it had broke. He sent it to Dell because he thought the hard-drive was faulty but it wasn't, he had corrupted the drive by turning it off at the switch according to dell. So here's the rundown of what i've tried;

- Won't load windows normally (BSOD after windows logo)

- Won't load windows in safe mode / last known working config (BSOD)

- Stalls on built-in windows repair / recovery mode (Loads a mouse & background image, but no boxes appear)

- Stalls on CD recovery disc (Loads mouse, background and a box asking what language/keyboard the computer is set too then stalls after)

- Stalls upon installing a fresh Windows 7 (Loads mouse, background and box asking what language/keyboard the computer is set too then stalls after when it says "Setup is preparing" or something like that.

- *Works using Ubuntu LiveCD, i was able to access the HDD and backup their documents.

- Computer locks up randomly at boot / in linux, the screen will turn white for a few seconds until it unfreezes.

* I think this is going to be my key to fixing the computer, possibly reformatting the harddrive in Ubuntu Live to then install a fresh copy of windows? Even then i don't know how/if you can reformat in Ubuntu as i never have used it.

Anything that you think may help please post, thankyou.

I would make sure the backups are good to go, then zero out the drive and then install a fresh copy of windows on it and see what happens.

Do you have an external DVD/CD drive available?

That may fix the CD stall error and allow repair. It's happened with a few of my laptop repairing endeavors in the past.

Backups are fine, stored on my computer now. What do you mean zero out the drive?

Unfortunately not, do you think the laptops cd/dvd drive is whats causing the computer to stall? It passed dells bios diagnostics and the discs are fine as i have used them on another computer today.

If it passed the BIOS diagnostics, then the CD stall error is most likely the internal CD drive. You could vouch for a new internal, but you'd be better off getting an external as they can be quite handy in most cases.

Typically if you have a problem booting from the HDD and from CD even if the problem is different then you can typically presume the issue is hardware and not software. I'd start troubleshooting it by connecting a USB/External CD/DVDROM first and see if you can run the windows repair from there. If it's freezing on the external CD/DVD ROM then you need to start troubleshooting things like bad RAM, bad PSU, bad mobo

RAM-related. Try installing with just one good RAM stick.
