Synology DS211j NAS - will it automatically format my drive during setup?

Thread Starter
Hi, I have purchased a DS211j NAS. I want to put my current 3.5" media hard drive inside it... my question is during the 'setup' process... will it automatically format this drive? Or will it leave all the data intact?

Thanks

It'll format it. The Synology devices utilize a proprietary OS that gets loaded onto the drive(s) during the initial setup. The devices do *not* contain boot information on any onboard RAM/ROM. It basically installs a scaled down variant of some Linux flavor... I have a DS209 myself...

This!!!!

Personally i would buy 2 new HDDs, do the intial setup and build a RAID 1 array if you want redundancy [RAIDing your drives not required, sugestion]. Then transfer your media files to the NAS smile.gif

PS: Configure 'File Sharing and privliges" to share files accross your network smile.gif
