Gtx 580

Thread Starter
I've read about power throttling on the GTX 580.. could anyone explain to me how it works. Would this affect graphics heavy games?
Thanks

Do you mean its power-saving mode?

No down throttling for me either. Went through 3DMark11 @944Mhz on air benched 7200 graphics score. I pushed 1.25mv thru mine.

I run over clocked 24/7 at stock 1.0880mv @875 since Jan 15th which is a constant 13% over clock. Never had an issue.

If I'm not mistaken what your talking about.....

Those who disable the clock speed throttling mechanism that like running the graphics card outside of its power specifications. Enthusiasts and over clockers that want to push way more voltage than it's limits. Trying to bypass it's safety feature to achieve higher benchmarks.

Throttling is designed to prevent hardware damage to the card and mobo, it doesn't happen in normal use of the 580 what so ever. It dosen't happen in heavy intensive graphic games either and are no problem even if pushed for hours, over clocked, added voltage or not. Just not beyond spec limits.

Down throttling was happening in benches like OCCT & Furmark testing where the 3D application feature is pushing the cards temps beyond normal limits and only due to over voltage beyond specs. Running the card out of specification design.

Every card has it's voltage limits. Only differnce is the 580 has a safety feature. All other cards over volt-ed beyond specifications just fry.

Not a concern for anyone unless you run a command line to disable the cards safety feature or re-write with a modded BIOS. It's a great way to protect components saving the card from potentially permanent damage. Hence why none of the 580 have any issues and are beastly over clockers, safely.

Even novice over clockers will have a hard time frying the 580 because of this saftey feature of down throttling when over volted to high and temps reach critical limits.

On a side note I love the performance on this single GPU gaming in 2D or 3D. No driver issues since install.

Hope that explained it for you OP.

Edited to add & correct spelling.

my card throttles, when i run furmark, i get really crappy fps and temps barely hit 50, when i run a game temps will go 60's + ,
