Crossfire 6970s or a 6990? (maybe crossfire 6990?)

Thread Starter
I've been on team Nvida for a while now, but I'm not liking the drivers right now...

I've been told that 6970 in Crossfire can perform better in some situations then a single 6990...

Obviously the choice would be to go Crossfire 6990.... buut is it really worth it at this point? This will be a BF3 rig, and I know the game is going to be really demanding for ultra, soo any input or advice would help.

6970 CF performs better than a single 6990 in almost all (I use this term since there is always at least 1 program that proves this statement wrong, but it is pretty much everything.) programs. try something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121430 in CF, that would do pretty well.

As said by lostmage, 2x6970 will typically run better than 1x6990.

As for crossfire with 2x6990, I could be wrong but I've heard there can be a few issues as it's technically 4-way crossfire.

two 6970's in CF would out perform a single 6990 as the 6990 is a little downclocked and would be a bit cheaper as well.

I'm not sure why there's a comic book in there, but its a good card if you got the money.

So its looking like the 6970 is the way to go.

My friend said I should just get 6950's and flash the to 6970's, but that wouldnt get the same performance as just buying 6970's would it?

If you can find original reference ones yeah you can flash them and try to unlock the shaders and up the clocks. The newer sapphire toxic 6950 also has a decent chance to unlock the shaders. The 6950s are a better price to performance than the 6970s even if they don't unlock.

That's true. 6950's are an incredible value. If you're looking to unlock, get yourself a Sapphire Toxic, but don't count on it. We're not talking about a huge increase anyway. 6950 crossifire will handle anything you throw at it.
