For those willing to help.

Hi guys, I know there probably have been a lot of people asking similar questions to mine but I just wanted some personal help.

I have a Sapphire 6870 GPU at the moment.. I don't really know how well this card will stand against the line up of games coming out. I have a 23" max res monitor and I'm wanting to play BF3 and Skyrim on max/ultra graphics with a very good frame rate.. I'm OCD when it comes to any framerate spikes/lag.

I'm just wondering what GPU I should spend the money on to upgrade from my 6870..? I have been looking at the gtx 580.. what AMD card is comparable to Nvidia's 580?

I'm willing to spend no more than $500.. What do you guys recommend..? Also, I may want to sell my 6870... its only a year old.. So if anyone wants to buy it off me.. let me know, eh?

Thanks in advance.

If you already have a 6870, just get another. That should be able to beat any single GPU.

If you're super sensitive to frame rate drops I would not suggest adding another 6870 for CF which I'm sure many will say right off the bat.

A single 580 or 6970 ought to give you a smooth experience within your $500 budget. 6950 CF is also a possibility but may suffer from more pronounced FPS drops if they don't unlock.

Basically what I'm suggesting is get a single high-end GPU that may not run 100fps like a CF setup of lower end cards will but it will also not suffer from severe frame rate drops as often as said pair. More GPU power on a single card = smoother gaming even though max FPS may not be as high. 6870 CF will not be able to do that (reviews almost never factor in minimum frame rates and how well the game actually "feels" to play on those types of setups).

What resolution are you using? That will affect your buying choices.

My GTX580 runs everything well 1920x1080.

if you pick up a second 6870, by far your cheapest option, you will get 580 spanking performance. check the benchmarks and see for yourself. the drawback to that though is you are leaving yourself no room to upgrade unless you sell both cards and start over. also you will be losing yourself .5gb of vram, which will be an especially important 1/2 gb in BF3. I've heard of vram usage up to and exceeding 1.4gb and who knows how much further that will climb in the future.

as far as a comparable amd card to a 580, there really isnt one. the 580 is nVidia's top single gpu and the 6970 is atm AMD's top tier single gpu. however, the price difference in these two cards is significant enough that most people don't consider them direct competitors.

since you're gaming single monitor and didn't mention getting a multi monitor setup any time soon, I'd have to suggest either buying a second 6870 or selling it and buying a 580 lightning or comparable card. a 580 or 6870 crossfire would be more than enough gpu power to last you for quite a while. the crossfire would be a more powerful solution, but would also be a shorter term fix.

last option, and my favorite, is to buy yourself a 6870x2 and trifire those bad boys. then you'll have a smoking setup, assuming your psu can handle it.

hope this helps.

HEy man slow your Roll! You can get another 6870 for around $150 now. Also don't forget the 7000 series cards are coming. You dont want to throw your money away by buying a gtx580 like everyone else

Moreover, anything greater that a 6870 will be bottlnecked by your CPU. If you spent the money on another 6870 or the GTX 580 you would become bottlnecked by your CPU. IMO the 1100t and the 6870 are made for each other. Anything more powerful on either side and you will have a bottleneck.

Don't crossfire.

Get a single card, I would suggest a 6950/6970/570/580

I'm running 1920x1080 resolution. I've thought about CFing my 6870 but would it be worth it? I just don't want to, in a year, look back and say "I should have just spent the money on a 580." Also - I'm not looking to use more than one monitor.

Thanks for the help guys.

Then wait.. otherwise you'll look back in a year and say "I wish I waited for a 7xxx or 6xx".

When will the 7xxx and 6xx come out? How much will they run.. High end?
