Which CPU upgrade from e2140 for Skyrim?

Thread Starter
Built my sister a rig (Gigaybte P35/E2140 OC to 3.0 on Freezer pro, 8800gt, 4GB DDR2 1000) for Oblivion years ago. Now she wants to play Skyrim on her 1900x1080/1200 monitor when it comes out.

The main question is - is the game multithreaded? Unfortunately they have not even released the official system requirements yet like they were supposed to.

I'm sure I could drop in a e5200/5700 or other 45nm dual core and get it to 4Ghz or close..

But I could also go the q6600 e0 route and get it to 3.6 Ghz or close.

So yeah basically what do you guys think? I can get a recert CPU for $50-$75 for a dual core. Or about $100 on Ebay can get a used q6600 in unknown condition.

GPU wise I think she should get a 6850/GTX 460 because I'm sure even that may be CPU limited.

The other option is to just leave her current processor and upgrade the graphics card to a 5770 or the like, but I'm unsure if it will be enough to max out Skyrim.

Thanks a ton... Just looking for recommendations.

Personally I would rather just go AMD.

On eBay the Q6600 goes for ~$100. You can grab a Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition for roughly $10-$15 more.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103808

The 955 beats the Q6600 by a lot.

You want my opinion? Sell the current stuff here in the Marketplace and grab a 955 BE, 4GB of DDR3, and decent AM3 motherboard from Newegg.

Well that's fantastic. I really bet that e2140's p35s and 8800gts are in quite a demand.

Seriously though did I ever mention selling the whole system and building a new one? Dont know if you realized it but setting up the computer takes time, and motherboards and ram cost money too. She lives far away and I have to guide her with this crap over the phone.

I'm an AMD fanboy but sheesh bud. This is the ******* INTEL section.

Anyway a q6600+6850 = $250
A e5700+6790 = $200
A 6770 = ~$100

x4+decent motherboard+ram+6850 = 115+100+40+150 = 405 not to mention a decent cooler if I want to overclock.

q6600 + 6850.

Should be enough to near-max out Skyrim without some top end features like AA/AF, some filter options and perhaps draw distance.

If Skyrim performance is closer to Oblivion then a dual-core and 6770 will max it, but I expect it to be a little more optimized and scalable for newer systems personally.

The difference in performance for not only Skyrim but other games between the e5700 + 6790 and q6600 + 6850 would be well worth the investment.

Be sure the motherboard can handle an overclocked q6600 though, power/VRM wise.

Grab the Q6600 and the 6850 or maybe the Other GPU, I have a Q6600 myself and see no real reason to upgrade from it yet. Also the Q6600 can be had for as low as $75-80 these days, check the fs section you should find some there.

Thanks for the tips, q6600 and 6850 it is...

I really wonder though how demanding Skyrim will be since it's DX9. Another thing to consider is that when Oblivion came out, the consoles were pretty good as far as graphics horsepower, and today, this is not the case. When I had my 5770 it destroyed anything I threw at it unless it was DX10/11. Still who knows maybe Bethseda will patch it in the future and on top of that I'm sure the mod community will have graphics tweaks like mad.

Over the years I have learned two things:

1- Motherboard VRM/power is super ******* important. Hopefully the P35-DS3L is good enough. It's a 6 phase so definitely nothing special..I think we'll add some VRM sinks just to be safe. As well as replace all the fans and add another to the CPU cooler. Also I'll make sure the GPU style is the type that exhausts out the back.
2- Don't buy open box items - Somebody returned it for a reason (On that note, it's not so bad if it's for an already stable system but definitely a no-no for new builds because a bad part or two can make troubleshooting a *****).

-Also probably need to make sure the PSU is up to the task..can't remember what's in there.

Skyrim is suppose to be Dx11 and have tessalation. I wouldn't buy any other cpu right now other than a 2500k for gaming. I would also grab a Gen 3 board for it so she could take advantage of Pci3.0 for when she wants a new Gpu in a few years. I moved from a q6600 3 years ago to i7 920. Seen BIG gains when having power hungry gpu's. Went to 980x and seen big gains again. I have 3 480's and moved from a $1000 cpu to the $180 2500k and gained 20%+ more performance out of my 3 480's on the SB platform and my M4E-Z.

I'm also waiting to play that game and would rather play on the SB with a Gen 3 for now. Will last her a lot longer!!

Yeah, I'm also wondering that. I can't imagine it requiring a quad core, I think it'll just be another dual core/dx9 console port type game, but hopefully i'm wrong. I've got my copy pre-ordered because the game will be epic regardless of graphics.

I've been seeing hd6870's for around $10-20 more than a hd6850. Wouldn't it almost be worth it just to go that route with the q6600? Or is it extreme budget upgrade?

I'm just going to jump on whatever deal I can find - be it gtx 460/6850/6870 or if I find a 6950 maybe I'll get it for myself and give her my 6850.

What I cann tell you is that my 6850 has been able to max out any game including the Battlefield 3 demo albeit with 2x AA, so I doubt she'll need much more than that. Plus 7000 series is probably not all that far away.
