Locking up while playing games.

Thread Starter
So, I've been having this odd issue of locking up while playing games.

It'll happen randomly, sometimes 5 minutes sometimes an hour.

I'm running:
Win7 64
6970+6950 crossfire
11.10 Revision 3

It's a full system lockup, sometimes it'll recover in 30 seconds and other times it will not recover and I'm forced to reboot.

I've tested everything I can think of to no avail.

Any tips?

is your cpu overclocked ? its either unstable cpu or could be your ram ..

11.10 drivers are fine for me , try using 1 card for an hour then try the other card for an hour to see which one gives u the problem , it could be a defective unit .

is your gpu's overclocked ? hard locks are usually caused by a display driver crash .. and does recover after 30 seconds or so .

In other words , i suggest you do some stress testing on your cpu and gpu to see if they are stable or not because they dont sound like they are .

or try using other drivers like the official 11.9

oh and what game do u play ?

CPU is OC'd, but it's stable 12 hours blend.

The 6970 is factory OC'd.

I tried it on MW2, Black Ops, BC2, Eve.

What do you recommend for hard testing GPU stability?

run furmark and test the GPU (factory OC isn't always stable) also run memtest.

Nice call on FurMark.

Ran the extreme burn in test, I got a nice rainbow of colors after ~5 minutes. Complete system lockup.

Where should I go now, RMA?

Also, is it not possible to use the second card only while the first is in? I unhooked the Crossfire bridge, but I get no video output from the second card.

Then remove one card and just use the other and swap after an hour or so. Do your cards have dual bios switch? If so then switch them over to the fresh bios and see what happens.

I'd restore all the OC, CPU, RAM, VGA to default then try again because you are installing Preview Drivers. It will be confusing either the driver or the OC is causing the lockups.

Or roll back to Catalyst 11.9 + CAP3 and try again http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

If the driver is the issue, there's nothing we can fix at this level.

Test each component to see what is broken, is the most effective way. You may not have spare parts around but it may save you time overall.
