I'm assuming the AM2+ would be the one he wants? If it's the wrong one, would it stil be worth getting the new CPU for it?

Well some of the AM2 boards don't support Phenom II, although some have a BIOS update for it I believe (can't really remember, this stuff was new back in 2009). Thats why I was asking about it. If it was indeed and AM2+ then I would definitely toss a 955BE or something at it and go to town.

He doesn't have to be able to play BF3 maxed out, but right now it's looking like he won't even be able to play it at all.

RAM is out of the equation, 4GB is fine for gaming right now, besides, getting 6 GB of RAM is assuming a 1366 Intel system, right ? I'm only suggesting buying the Phenom II X4 955 BE or the 960T and keeping everything else as it is.

Just check if the motherboard he has is compatible. If it is an older board, it's more likely it will only be (at least officially, I guess) compatible with the Phenom II X4 955 BE. It costs $119.99 on Newegg.

It looks like the phenom II CPUs are really cheap. Around 120$. Am I looking at the right ones? I seen the 4x 60t for I think 129$. Are those CPUs really good enough to give the 570 justice. I'm trying to get him ready for a lesser known game called BF3.

And what about his 800mhz RAM? Will it have to go too?

Throw in a 955 OC to 3.4-3.6 using stock cooler and your good to go

Yeah, like tpi2007 said don't worry about the RAM right now, I would grab a 955BE just to be sure of compatibility. You can probably find one on the markets here for half the price of a new one.

It's not speed of cpu it's feature set.
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AM...CGDBOX%29.html

It's got a horribly slow hypertransport and horribly slow memory controller. So you'd have to squeeze both those hard. Get his ht link speed to 2400+ and his memory running at least 880 or better mhz so when the vid card takes over the bus it's not inheriting a yugo with bad spark plugs.

Heres the support list, seems like most all of the CPU's will work, maybe just a BIOS update.

I ended up finding it. Looks like he should be in there for about 130$. I can't believe how cheap those are. It almost seems to easy. I would say with one of those and a 570 he should be pretty good for awhile. His Ram ended up being 1066 too, so that should help me out also. His MOBO just had it recognized wrong. Mine did the same thing to me. It seen mine as 1066 instead of 1600.

I know this type of question is asked all the time, but how much of a difference will one of the PII 4x CPUs and going from a 4870 to a gtx 570 help his system out? To me it looks like he should be alright with any game out there at 1080p on some pretty high settings.

How does the pII x4 CPU's compare to the i7s? Should his system be on par or close to mine if I had a single 570?
