New to folding, need some advice..

Thread Starter
Hello all, I just found out about Folding@Home and I love the idea behind it and enjoy the competitive nature about it as well. I have an i7-960 @ 3.2 Ghz (for now) and an Sapphire 6950 with 6970 BIOS and clocks.

Couple of questions:

1. How can I improve on my folding rates? My PPD (compared to other similar setups) seems a little low at 1389 on smp and an unknown for my gpu (im on an unknown streak with this current project) but previously the gpu was running at ~3000 PPD.

2. What is all this stuff about bonus's? I need a little better explanation that what I was reading in some guides. And what are -adv 's ?

3. I have the v7 FAHControl...and from what I'm seeing there are no trackers that can help with estimations and calculations...am I right?

Thanks in advance for your help,

I would think 1.3k PPD on the i7 is pretty low. Try not folding on the 5770's for now and follow this guide. There is a flag you need add onto the GPU client to minimize cpu cycles which is probably why your cpu ppd is low. You'd have to wait for someone more knowledgeable though since I don't know what it is.

After you fold 10smp wu's you get bonus points for completing workunits before the preferred due date. I started folding SMP on 10/15 everything before then was my ps3 and laptop. You can see here that my PPD skyrockets after I finish the 10th wu without changing anything after folding that 10th wu. The big/huge-advs I believe are just bigger work units that give more points.

Lastly try out the dedicated cpu and gpu folding clients the v7 one was kinda buggy for me and didn't show estimated PPD at all.

As said by the above poster, use the dedicated smp client with -smp 8 flag (so it can use all of ur i7 8 threads) and following by flag -bigadv.

The problem with ur low ppd is that maybe its only folding on 1 thread.

Tpf is time per frame, the time it takes to complete 1% of the work unit.

Check out the folding section here on ocn for guides.

FOLD ON!

Edit: if u havent done 10 smp units under ur passkey yet, DO NOT DO use bigadv flag yet because u wont receive the bonus associated with bigadv work units.

Good luck, and i gotta admit folding was very confusing to me at first but once u got it setup its very rewarding.
